Key takeaways
- A nikahnama alone is rarely enough abroad; you need a registered, authenticated certificate.
- Apostille for Convention countries (UK, US, Canada, Saudi Arabia); embassy attestation for others such as the UAE (check current rules).
- Both spouses usually must attend registration, so plan it within the NRI partner's visit.
- Names and dates in the nikahnama must match passports exactly.
- Protect the bride: register the marriage and keep copies of the groom's foreign documents.
Every year, thousands of Muslim families from Delhi arrange a nikah for a son working in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha or London, or a daughter who will join her husband in Toronto or Sydney. Every year, a good number of those couples discover, months later, that the paperwork they left India with is not what the foreign authority wants. The nikahnama is in Urdu and the embassy wants English. The names do not match the passports. There is no government certificate. The certificate was never apostilled. The groom flew back before the registration appointment. The bride's visa application is refused, and the couple spend another six months apart.
Our NRI Muslim nikah package, ₹30,000, exists to prevent that. It combines the nikah by our own Qazi, government registration of the marriage in Delhi, and authentication of the certificate for use abroad by apostille or embassy attestation, planned from the first day around the country the couple will live in and the dates the NRI partner is in India.
The price reflects the chain. A nikah alone is a single event. An NRI marriage is a sequence of five or six steps across different offices, each of which depends on the one before, and most of which must fit inside a short window of leave. Our work is to plan that sequence before anyone boards a plane, and then to see every link through to the end, so that the couple are not left chasing an office from four thousand kilometres away.
What the ₹30,000 Package Includes
| Stage | What we do |
| Planning call | We learn the destination country, visa type, the NRI partner's travel dates, and the documents available |
| Document check | Passports, age proof, IDs, address proof, foreign documents; names matched letter by letter to passports |
| Nikah | Read by our Qazi, with nikahnama and certificate in English (Urdu alongside if wanted) |
| Affidavits | Marital status, name declarations, and any declarations the foreign authority commonly expects |
| Government registration | Application under the Delhi 2014 Order (or the Special Marriage Act where the couple choose it), appointment planned around the NRI partner's dates |
| Authentication | State authentication, then MEA apostille for Apostille Convention countries, or MEA attestation for embassy legalisation where required |
| Translation | Certified translations of Urdu or other documents where needed |
| Courier | Originals couriered to the couple within India; scans sent immediately |
Government fees, MEA and embassy charges, and international courier costs are paid at actual cost and quoted in advance. Our separate apostille service is ₹4,500 for couples who already have a registered certificate.
Why a Nikahnama Alone Is Not Enough Abroad
- It is a private document. Foreign governments generally want a public document issued by the Indian state, which means a registered marriage certificate.
- It needs to be authenticated. A foreign authority cannot verify an Indian signature or seal. Apostille or attestation is the chain of verification they rely on.
- Language: handwritten Urdu or Arabic nikahnamas usually need certified translation.
- Names must match passports: foreign immigration systems compare spellings strictly.
- Proof of both spouses' presence: some authorities look for evidence that both spouses took part, such as photographs and the registration record.
Apostille or Embassy Attestation?
India joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2005. For countries that are also parties, a single apostille issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs is enough. For countries that are not parties, the document is attested by the MEA and then legalised by that country's embassy or consulate in India, and sometimes again by its foreign ministry on arrival.
| Destination | Usual route (check current rules) |
| United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, most of Europe | Apostille (Canada joined the Convention in 2024) |
| Saudi Arabia | Apostille; Saudi Arabia joined the Convention in 2022 |
| Oman, Bahrain | Apostille, as parties to the Convention |
| United Arab Emirates | Traditionally MEA attestation followed by UAE embassy attestation and MOFA on arrival; check current rules |
| Other countries | Depends on whether they are parties; we check the current status table |
Before the MEA acts, a Delhi government certificate normally needs authentication by the Delhi government. Countries also change their requirements, sometimes asking for additional documents such as a police clearance or single-status certificate for the spouse. We check the destination's current rules at the start and again before submitting.
Planning Around the NRI Partner's Visit
The biggest cause of failure is timing. The nikah can happen on the first day of a visit, but registration needs an appointment that both spouses attend, and authentication takes further time. The NRI partner's leave is usually the limiting factor.
| When | What should happen |
| Before the flight to India | Planning call; documents sent by scan; name spellings fixed; witnesses identified; registration application prepared |
| First days in India | Nikah; affidavits sworn; registration filed if not already |
| During the visit | Registration appointment attended by both spouses and witnesses |
| After registration | Certificate collected; state authentication and MEA apostille or attestation begun |
| After the NRI partner leaves | Authentication completed; originals couriered; spouse visa filed |
If the NRI partner can stay only a week or two, tell us before booking flights. We will plan backwards from the departure date so that the one step that needs both of you, the registration appointment, happens while you are both here.
Names: The Detail That Sinks Visa Applications
Immigration systems are unforgiving about names. Before the nikah we fix, for both spouses:
- The exact spelling and order of names as in the passport, including middle names.
- Whether "Mohammed", "Mohammad", "Muhammad" or "Mohd." is used, matching the passport.
- Whether a surname is present in the passport; many Indian passports show only a given name. The nikahnama and certificate should match.
- Fathers' names as in the passport.
- Dates of birth as in the passport.
Where other documents such as school certificates show different spellings, an affidavit declaring that the names refer to the same person is filed with the registration. The nikahnama and certificate follow the passport.
Documents Needed
| Document | Indian resident partner | NRI or foreign partner |
| Passport | If available | Essential; copies of all used pages |
| Visa or residence permit abroad | — | Copy |
| Age proof | Class 10 certificate, birth certificate or passport | Passport |
| Identity and address proof | Aadhaar, voter ID; Delhi address proof | Passport; Indian address proof if an Indian citizen |
| Marital status | Affidavit | Affidavit; for a foreign national, a single-status certificate from their embassy or home authorities |
| Previous marriage | Divorce decree or death certificate | Same, with translation and authentication if foreign |
| Photographs | Passport-size | Passport-size |
Foreign documents in languages other than English usually need certified translation, and some need authentication in the country that issued them. Start collecting them early.
When One Partner Is a Foreign National
An NRI is an Indian citizen living abroad. A foreign national is a citizen of another country, including people of Indian origin who hold foreign passports and OCI cards. The Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 applies where at least one party is an Indian citizen. For a foreign spouse:
- A valid passport and visa are required, and the foreign spouse must be lawfully in India.
- Registration offices commonly ask for a certificate of single status or no impediment from the foreign spouse's embassy.
- If both partners are Muslim, a nikah can be read and then registered. If the foreign partner is not Muslim, the Special Marriage Act is usually the right route; see our Nikah + Special Marriage Act service.
- The marriage may also need to be registered or recognised in the foreign spouse's country under its own rules.
- Marriage does not by itself change the foreign spouse's immigration status in India; any change goes through the immigration authorities.
What the NRI Partner Should Bring From Abroad
Much of the delay in NRI marriages comes from documents left behind in Dubai or London. Before flying, the NRI partner should pack:
- Original passport, plus copies of all pages with entries.
- Residence permit or visa of the country of residence (for example, a Gulf residence card or a UK biometric permit), with a copy.
- A salary certificate or employment letter, if the spouse's visa will depend on the sponsor's income or job.
- A tenancy contract or accommodation proof abroad, if the destination country asks for it when sponsoring family.
- Indian documents: Class 10 certificate or birth certificate, Aadhaar, PAN and Delhi address proof.
- If previously married: the divorce decree or death certificate, with authentication if issued abroad.
- Recent passport photographs that meet the destination country's specifications.
What the Bride Should Prepare
- Her own passport, valid for well beyond the expected travel date. If she has none, apply early; passports can take weeks.
- Name in the passport: she need not change her surname. Some authorities, particularly in parts of the Gulf, have preferred to see the husband's name in the wife's passport; check the destination's current practice before applying for a new passport.
- Educational certificates, authenticated, if she plans to work or study abroad.
- Medical tests may be required by some countries for residence visas; they are done according to the destination's rules.
- Her own copies of the nikahnama, certificate, apostille and the groom's documents.
Adding the Spouse's Name to a Passport
Many destination countries look at whether each spouse's passport shows the other's name. In India, a spouse's name can be added to a passport through a reissue application on the Passport Seva portal, usually supported by the registered marriage certificate. Passport rules also allow certain declarations in some cases, but a registered certificate is the simplest and most widely accepted proof. Plan this before the visa application, since a reissued passport takes time.
Useful Conditions in the Nikahnama for NRI Marriages
The nikahnama can contain lawful conditions agreed by both sides. For brides who will live far from their families, some conditions give real protection:
- Delegated right of divorce (talaq-e-tafweez): the husband delegates to the wife the right to dissolve the marriage in specified circumstances, such as desertion, failure to maintain for a stated period, or taking another wife. Indian courts have recognised such delegation.
- Residence: an agreement about where the couple will live, or that the wife may return to India to visit her family.
- Work and study: the wife's right to continue her education or career.
- Mahr: a specific amount, stated in rupees (a foreign-currency figure can be added alongside), with the prompt part paid at the nikah.
Conditions must be lawful and agreed freely. We record them clearly so they can be relied on later.
Which Registration Route for NRI Couples?
For two Muslims, the Delhi 2014 Order is the natural route, and it keeps Muslim personal law. After the Delhi High Court's directions in Faizan Ayubi v. GNCTD (2024) that online registration of Muslim marriages must be available under the 2014 Order, we check the current route at the time of applying.
Some NRI couples choose the Special Marriage Act deliberately, because its certificate is familiar to foreign authorities, or because they want its civil framework. That choice brings the marriage under the Act, with court-only divorce and succession under the Indian Succession Act. It also involves a thirty-day notice, so it must be planned well ahead of the NRI partner's visit. We explain both options at the planning stage.
Gulf Family Visas
Most of our NRI Muslim couples are headed to the Gulf. Some common points, which vary by country and change over time:
- A registered marriage certificate, authenticated for that country, is the core document.
- Names and dates must match passports exactly.
- Employers or sponsors often have their own conditions, such as a minimum salary or job category, for sponsoring a spouse.
- Some countries require the certificate to be attested again by their foreign ministry after arrival.
- Processing is faster when the sponsor has everything ready before applying.
We handle the Indian side of the paperwork. The sponsor handles the application in the destination country.
UK, US, Canada and Other Countries
- Spouse and partner visas in these countries typically want the marriage certificate, evidence of the genuineness of the relationship (photographs, communication history, visits), and sometimes evidence of the nikah ceremony itself.
- Apostille is normally enough for authentication.
- Translation of any Urdu nikahnama is usually required.
- Polygamous marriages are not recognised for immigration purposes in these countries. A man already married cannot sponsor a second wife.
- Proxy or remote nikahs are viewed with suspicion or not recognised by some countries; both partners attending the nikah in person is the safest course.
Can the Nikah Be Done While One Partner Is Abroad?
Families sometimes ask for a nikah with the groom abroad, joining by video, or through a wakil appointed by him. Muslim law recognises the appointment of an agent (wakil) to accept a nikah on someone's behalf, under a proper written authority. However:
- We do not read nikahs over video calls.
- A nikah through a wakil complicates government registration, because both spouses usually have to appear at the registration office.
- Several countries do not recognise, or scrutinise heavily, marriages where one partner was not physically present.
Our strong advice is to plan the nikah and registration for a visit when both are in India. If a wakil nikah is unavoidable for family reasons, speak to us first so we can explain its consequences for registration and immigration.
When the Bride Lives Abroad
Not every NRI nikah involves a groom abroad. Increasingly, the bride is the one working or studying overseas, and the groom will join her. The paperwork is the same, with a few differences:
- The bride's passport and her foreign visa or residence permit determine what the destination country wants.
- Some countries require the sponsoring spouse to meet income or accommodation conditions; the bride should check these before the nikah date is fixed.
- For a Sunni bride who will travel for the nikah, her consent is given directly to our Qazi; if she cannot travel, a wakil nikah raises the same registration and recognition problems described above.
- The groom's documents, such as his degree certificates or police clearance, may need authentication for his own visa; start them in parallel.
OCI Card Holders and Foreign Citizens of Indian Origin
A person with an OCI card is a foreign citizen, even if born in India. For marriage purposes, they are treated as a foreign national. That means their foreign passport, their visa or OCI documents, and usually a single-status certificate from their country's embassy or authorities. If both partners are Muslim, a nikah can be read and registered with those documents; if not, the Special Marriage Act route applies. The Law Commission's 2024 recommendation for compulsory registration covered marriages involving OCIs too, reflecting the same concerns about brides left without remedy.
Children Born Abroad
Couples who move abroad often have children there. To register a child's birth with the Indian mission, apply for the child's Indian passport, or later for OCI, the parents' marriage certificate is usually required. A registered and apostilled certificate obtained now saves a great deal of trouble later. Keep several authenticated copies and scans in both parents' email.
How Apostille Works, Step by Step
- Registered certificate: issued by the Delhi government after registration.
- State authentication: the Delhi government's designated department verifies and authenticates the certificate. This is required before the MEA acts on a state-issued document.
- Submission to the MEA: through the MEA's authorised collection channels, with the applicant's passport copy and the authenticated certificate.
- Apostille: the MEA affixes the apostille, which is recognised by all parties to the Convention without further legalisation.
- Embassy legalisation (non-Apostille countries): instead of an apostille, the MEA attests the document, and the destination country's embassy then legalises it.
- Delivery: the document is returned and sent to you.
Timelines vary with workloads at each office. Build in several weeks. Do not book a visa appointment for which the authenticated certificate is essential until it is in hand.

If the Marriage Runs Into Trouble Abroad
No one plans for this, but NRI marriages carry particular risks, and it helps to know the ground rules in advance.
- Foreign divorce decrees: the Supreme Court held in Y. Narasimha Rao v. Y. Venkata Lakshmi (1991) that a foreign divorce decree is recognised in India only in limited circumstances, broadly where the foreign court had proper jurisdiction and the decree rests on grounds available under the law that governs the marriage. A divorce obtained abroad without the wife's participation may not be recognised here.
- Talaq pronounced abroad: instant triple talaq is void under Indian law wherever it is pronounced, and pronouncing it is an offence under the 2019 Act.
- Maintenance: the wife can seek maintenance in India. Enforcing an Indian order abroad depends on the other country's laws.
- Help abroad: Indian embassies and consulates have facilities to assist Indian women in distress in marriages abroad, including referrals to legal help.
- Documents: the wife should always keep her own passport, residence documents and copies of the marriage papers. A wife whose passport is held by her husband or in-laws is at serious risk.
Registration in India, clear mahr, sensible conditions in the nikahnama and a full set of documents with the bride's own family are the best protection. They take a few hours to arrange before the wedding and can save years of hardship.
A Word to Families Arranging NRI Nikahs
Families on both sides often focus on the wedding: the venue, the dinner, the guest list. The foreign partner's leave is short and it is tempting to leave paperwork for "later". Later is usually a visa refusal. Please do three things before any function is booked: send us both passports, confirm the destination country's document rules, and fix the registration appointment inside the visit. The celebrations can then be planned around the dates that matter.
NRI Families Across Delhi
Our NRI couples come from every part of Muslim Delhi: Old Delhi's mohallas, Jamia Nagar and Okhla, Nizamuddin, Seelampur and Jafrabad, Mustafabad and Chand Bagh, Sadar Bazar and Quraish Nagar, and the newer colonies of Dwarka, Rohini and Mayur Vihar. Many grooms work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain; others in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. The paperwork chain is the same; only the last link, the destination country's authentication rule, differs.
Already Married Abroad?
Some couples come to us after marrying abroad, for example by a nikah registered at a court in a Gulf country, or a civil marriage in the UK. They want the marriage recognised in India, or need Indian paperwork for a spouse's visa or a child's passport.
- The foreign certificate is the primary record. A marriage validly performed and registered abroad is generally recognised in India. To use the foreign certificate in India, it usually needs authentication: apostille in the issuing country if that country is a party to the Convention, or attestation by the Indian embassy there.
- Translation: Arabic or other foreign-language certificates need certified translation.
- Registration in Delhi: the Delhi 2014 Order covers marriages solemnised in Delhi, so a marriage performed abroad is not usually re-registered under it. Do not have a second nikah in Delhi just to obtain an Indian certificate without advice; two records of one marriage with different dates cause confusion.
- The Foreign Marriage Act, 1969 provides for marriages of Indian citizens abroad before Indian diplomatic officers in certain cases. If your marriage was performed that way, its certificate is an Indian document.
Bring us the foreign documents and tell us the purpose; we will advise on the cleanest way to use them.

Our Honest Advice
We have seen too many couples spend months apart because a family wanted to "do the paperwork later". The whole chain, from nikah to apostille, is straightforward when planned and painful when rushed. If you remember one thing from this page, let it be this: fix the names to the passports and the registration appointment to the NRI partner's dates before anything else.
Sample Plans for Different Lengths of Leave
| Leave in India | What is realistic |
| 7 days | Nikah on day 1–2; registration appointment within the week only if booked in advance and slots are available; authentication after departure |
| 14 days | Nikah early; registration during the second week in most cases; authentication begun before departure and completed after |
| 30 days or more | Nikah, registration and, often, state authentication and apostille completed before departure |
| Special Marriage Act route | Needs 30 days' notice after filing; plan a longer stay or file the notice on an earlier visit |
These are guides. Appointment availability changes, and some destinations need additional documents. The earlier we start, the more of the chain fits inside the visit.
The Nikah Itself
An NRI nikah is the same as any nikah. The Qazi confirms that both are adults of sound mind (the bride at least 18, the groom at least 21 under our rule), that both consent freely, that neither is within a prohibited relationship, and that the bride is not married to anyone else or in iddat. He hears the bride's consent directly, recites the khutba, and the offer and acceptance are made before the witnesses: for Sunnis, two adult Muslim men, or one man and two women. The mahr is recorded in figures and words, prompt and deferred. Everyone signs, and the nikahnama and certificate are handed over the same day.
For NRI couples we add three things: the names and dates are taken from the passports, the documents are prepared in English with Urdu alongside if the families wish, and the nikahnama records full addresses of the witnesses, because a foreign authority may one day ask how to contact them.
When Both Partners Live Abroad
Sometimes both the bride and groom live abroad, perhaps in different countries, and come to Delhi only for the nikah because the families are here. The same planning applies, with two extra considerations: both partners' residence documents may be needed by the destination country, and registration in Delhi needs a Delhi connection, usually the nikah performed in Delhi and witnesses with Delhi address proof. If neither partner will be in India for long, consider whether marrying in the country of residence, and authenticating that certificate, is simpler.
Second Marriages and NRI Grooms
A particularly painful pattern we have seen: a groom working abroad, already married there or in India, enters a second nikah in Delhi without telling the bride's family, and the bride discovers the truth only when her visa application is refused or she arrives abroad. Muslim personal law permits a man more than one wife in limited circumstances, but concealment is never acceptable, and many destination countries do not recognise a second wife at all for immigration.
To protect brides, we require every NRI groom to disclose his marital status in writing, supported by an affidavit. We encourage the bride's family to ask for copies of his passport, residence permit and employment details, and to verify them. If the groom refuses, that refusal is information in itself.
Why We Insist on Registration for NRI Marriages
For a couple living in Delhi, registration is important. For a couple where one partner lives abroad, it is essential. The registered certificate is the document the visa depends on, the document the wife relies on if she is ever abandoned, and the document an Indian mission abroad will ask for when the couple's first child is born. The Law Commission's 2024 recommendation that marriages involving NRIs and OCIs be compulsorily registered reflects exactly this experience. We will not treat an NRI nikah as complete until registration is at least filed.
After the Bride Arrives Abroad
- Register with the Indian embassy or consulate if the country offers registration for Indian nationals.
- Keep her passport and residence documents in her own possession.
- Save the local emergency numbers and the embassy's helpline.
- Keep scans of the marriage certificate, apostille and nikahnama in her own email.
- Stay in regular contact with her family in India.
Protecting the Bride in NRI Marriages
The Law Commission of India, in its 287th Report (February 2024), recommended compulsory registration of marriages between NRIs or OCIs and Indian citizens, precisely because too many Indian brides have been abandoned by husbands abroad. Until such a law is passed, the protection lies in the paperwork, and we build it in.
- Registration in India: a registered certificate makes it much harder for a husband to deny the marriage.
- Copies of the husband's documents: the bride's family should keep copies of his passport, visa or residence permit, employment details, and address abroad.
- The mahr, clearly written: a specific amount, prompt and deferred, in the nikahnama.
- Her own documents: the bride should hold her own passport, certificate and bank card, not hand them to in-laws.
- Emergency contacts abroad: the Indian embassy or consulate in the country, and community organisations.
- Maintenance rights: a wife can claim maintenance in India under the general law as well as Muslim law; the Supreme Court confirmed this for Muslim women in Mohd. Abdul Samad (2024).
If a groom refuses to register the marriage or share his foreign documents, treat it as a serious warning.
Our Process, Step by Step
- Planning call: destination, visa type, travel dates, sect and tradition, previous marriages.
- Scans of documents: both partners' passports, age proof, IDs; foreign documents.
- Name and date check: fixed to match passports.
- Nikah date fixed: early in the NRI partner's visit.
- Nikah: read by our Qazi, with your own witnesses; nikahnama and certificate in English.
- Affidavits: marital status, name declarations, and others as needed.
- Registration: filed and appointment attended by both spouses and witnesses.
- Authentication: state authentication, then MEA apostille or attestation, then embassy legalisation if required.
- Delivery: originals couriered; scans sent immediately for the visa application.
| Stage | Typical time |
| Nikah | Day 1–3 of the visit |
| Registration | Depends on appointment availability; planned within the visit |
| State authentication and MEA apostille | Usually one to three weeks after the certificate, depending on current workloads |
| Embassy legalisation (non-Apostille countries) | Additional time set by the embassy |
Witnesses
A Sunni nikah needs two adult Muslim male witnesses, or one man and two women, who know the couple. The registration office needs two witnesses with Delhi address proof. We do not provide witnesses. For NRI families this usually means relatives living in Delhi. Confirm their availability for both the nikah and the registration appointment before the NRI partner flies in.
Common Mistakes in NRI Nikahs
- Names in the nikahnama that do not match passports.
- No government registration before the NRI partner leaves.
- Assuming an apostille is enough for a country that requires embassy attestation, or the reverse.
- Urdu-only nikahnama with no certified translation.
- A wakil or video nikah that the destination country does not recognise.
- A groom with an existing marriage sponsoring a second wife to a country that does not recognise polygamy.
- The bride's family keeping no copies of the groom's foreign documents.
- Leaving authentication until the visa appointment is booked.
Five NRI Couples
The Dubai engineer
A groom from Zakir Nagar working in Dubai had twelve days of leave. We fixed the name spellings from his passport before he flew, read the nikah on day two, filed registration the same week, and the appointment took place on day nine with both families' elders as witnesses. The certificate then went through MEA and UAE embassy attestation. His wife's residence visa was issued seven weeks later.
The Riyadh driver
A driver from Seelampur working in Riyadh had had his nikah three years earlier, but the nikahnama was handwritten in Urdu and never registered. During his annual leave we prepared a marriage deed, registered the marriage, and arranged apostille, which Saudi Arabia now accepts. His wife joined him on a family visa.
The London doctor
A doctor working in the UK married a doctor from Okhla. Both wanted a nikah and a certificate the UK Home Office would readily accept. We read the nikah, registered it, and apostilled the certificate. The visa application also used their photographs and communication history as evidence of a genuine relationship.
The Canadian permanent resident
A Canadian permanent resident of Indian citizenship married in Delhi. Canada joined the Apostille Convention in 2024, so apostille replaced the older consular process. The sponsorship application was filed with the apostilled certificate and a certified translation of the nikahnama.
The warning signs
A family approached us for a nikah with a groom working in the Gulf who refused to share his passport copy and wanted the nikah done through a wakil without registration. We explained our concerns to the bride's family. They postponed the nikah, made inquiries, and discovered he was already married abroad.

How We Help
We plan the whole chain before the NRI partner books a flight: nikah, registration, authentication and delivery, fitted to the destination country's current rules and the dates you are in India. We read a complete nikah through our own Qazi, make sure every name matches the passports, register the marriage on the correct route, and see the certificate through state authentication, MEA apostille or attestation, and embassy legalisation where needed. We do not provide witnesses, we do not read nikahs over video, and we do not help conceal an existing marriage.

Questions and Answers
Is a nikahnama enough for a spouse visa?▼
Rarely. Most foreign authorities want a government-registered marriage certificate, authenticated by apostille or embassy attestation, with names matching passports. The nikahnama is supporting evidence.
What does the ₹30,000 package include?▼
Planning, document checks, name matching, the nikah by our Qazi, affidavits, Delhi registration, and handling of state authentication and MEA apostille or attestation. Official fees, embassy charges and international courier are at cost.
Which countries accept an apostille?▼
Countries that are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, including the UK, US, most of Europe, Australia, Canada (since 2024), Saudi Arabia (since 2022), Oman and Bahrain. Always check the current status.
Does the UAE accept an apostille?▼
The UAE has traditionally required MEA attestation followed by UAE embassy attestation and MOFA attestation after arrival. Check the current rules when applying.
Can we register the marriage after the NRI partner leaves?▼
Usually both spouses must attend registration. Plan the appointment within the visit. If that is impossible, late registration is possible on the next visit, but the visa will wait.
How long does the whole process take?▼
The nikah takes a day, registration depends on appointments, and authentication usually one to three weeks or more. Build in several weeks before the visa application.
Can the groom join the nikah by video call?▼
We do not read nikahs by video. Several countries also do not recognise, or closely scrutinise, marriages where one partner was not present. Plan the nikah for a visit.
Can a wakil accept the nikah for the groom abroad?▼
Muslim law permits a properly appointed wakil, but it complicates registration and may not be recognised by the destination country. Speak to us before choosing this.
Why must names match passports?▼
Immigration systems compare names letter by letter. A mismatch between the certificate and the passport is a common reason for visa delays or refusals.
What if the nikahnama is in Urdu?▼
We provide English documents and arrange certified translation of the Urdu nikahnama where the foreign authority requires it.
What is state authentication?▼
Before the MEA apostilles or attests a state-issued document, the issuing state government, here Delhi, verifies and authenticates it.
Can you apostille an old certificate?▼
Yes. If you already have a registered certificate, our apostille service is ₹4,500 plus official fees.
We had our nikah years ago but never registered. Can the package help?▼
Yes. We prepare a marriage deed if needed, register the marriage, and authenticate the certificate.
Which registration route do you use?▼
For two Muslims, registration under the Delhi 2014 Order, keeping Muslim personal law. Some couples choose the Special Marriage Act deliberately; it needs thirty days' notice and changes succession.
Is the Special Marriage Act certificate better for visas?▼
It is widely recognised, but a registered certificate under the 2014 Order is also a government certificate. Choose the route for legal reasons, not just visa convenience.
Can a man already married sponsor a second wife to the UK or Canada?▼
No. Countries such as the UK, US and Canada do not recognise polygamous marriages for immigration. We require full disclosure of any existing marriage.
What documents does a foreign spouse need?▼
Passport, visa, and usually a single-status certificate from their embassy, with translation. Other documents depend on their country.
Is an OCI card holder an NRI?▼
No. An OCI card holder is a foreign citizen and is treated as a foreign national for marriage purposes.
Do we need witnesses from Delhi?▼
A Sunni nikah needs two adult Muslim witnesses (two men, or one man and two women). Registration under the 2014 Order needs two witnesses with Delhi address proof. We do not provide witnesses.
Can you courier the documents abroad?▼
Yes. Originals can be couriered internationally at cost, and scans are sent immediately.
What protects the bride in an NRI marriage?▼
Registration in India, a clear mahr, her own documents, and copies of the groom's passport, visa and employment details. The Law Commission recommended compulsory registration of NRI marriages in 2024 for exactly this reason.
What should the bride's family be wary of?▼
A groom who refuses to register, will not share his passport or residence details, wants a wakil nikah without good reason, or hides his marital status abroad.
Can the bride claim maintenance if abandoned?▼
Yes. She can claim maintenance in India under the general law and Muslim law. Registration and copies of the husband's documents make enforcement far easier.
Is the certificate needed for children born abroad?▼
Yes. Indian missions usually require the parents' marriage certificate to register a child's birth or issue a passport. Keep authenticated copies.
Can you handle a nikah where the bride lives abroad?▼
Yes. The same process applies, planned around her visit. The destination country's sponsor rules apply to her.
Does the package include the visa application?▼
No. We prepare the Indian documents. The visa application is made by the couple or sponsor in the destination country's system.
What if the destination country wants a police clearance?▼
Police clearance certificates come from the passport authorities or police and are separate. We can tell you where to apply, but they are not part of the package.
Do you read Shia nikahs for NRIs?▼
Yes. Our Qazi follows your tradition. Documents and registration are the same.
How early should we contact you?▼
Before the NRI partner books flights. A planning call and document scans in advance let us fit the nikah and registration into the visit.
Can the nikah and registration happen in one week?▼
Sometimes, depending on appointment availability. Tell us the dates early and we will plan backwards from the departure date.
What if an embassy asks for more documents later?▼
We help with any additional Indian documents or declarations they ask for, such as affidavits or further attested copies.
Can we get extra authenticated copies?▼
Yes, at official cost. Couples moving abroad often need more than one.
Is the price different for Gulf and Western countries?▼
The package price is the same. Official fees differ by route and country and are charged at cost.
We married in Dubai. Can we register again in Delhi?▼
A marriage performed abroad is usually proved with the foreign certificate, authenticated for use in India. The Delhi 2014 Order covers marriages solemnised in Delhi. Do not hold a second nikah just to get an Indian certificate without advice.
What should the groom bring from the Gulf?▼
Passport, residence permit, salary certificate or employment letter, accommodation proof if needed for family sponsorship, and his Indian documents: age proof, Aadhaar, PAN and Delhi address proof.
Does the bride need her husband's name in her passport?▼
Not by Indian law. Some Gulf authorities have preferred it. Check the destination's current practice; a reissue with the spouse's name can be done using the registered certificate.
What is talaq-e-tafweez and why is it useful?▼
It is a delegated right of divorce given by the husband to the wife in the nikahnama, usable in stated circumstances such as desertion or non-maintenance. It gives brides living abroad real protection.
Is a foreign divorce valid in India?▼
Only in limited circumstances. The Supreme Court held in Y. Narasimha Rao (1991) that a foreign decree must meet conditions linked to the law governing the marriage. Take advice in both countries.
Can mahr be fixed in dirhams or riyals?▼
It is best to state mahr in rupees, with a foreign-currency figure alongside if the families wish. Clarity avoids later disputes over exchange rates.
How long does apostille take?▼
It depends on current workloads at the Delhi government and the MEA. Plan for one to three weeks or more, and longer for embassy legalisation.
Can you do everything while the groom is abroad after the nikah?▼
Authentication and courier can be completed after he leaves. Registration usually needs both spouses, so it must be done while he is here.
What if the bride's family wants the nikah in their village?▼
The nikah can be anywhere, but for registration in Delhi the nikah should be performed in Delhi or a Delhi connection must exist. Plan accordingly.
Can you help with the Indian embassy abroad?▼
We handle the Indian side in Delhi. For services at an Indian mission abroad, such as a child's passport, we tell you which documents to carry.
The groom has only seven days of leave. Is that enough?▼
The nikah, yes. Registration within seven days is possible only if the application is prepared in advance and an appointment is available. Authentication will usually be completed after he leaves.
Can the whole process finish within a thirty-day visit?▼
Often, yes: nikah, registration, and in many cases state authentication and apostille. It depends on appointment availability and current workloads.
Do both partners living abroad need to come to Delhi?▼
For a nikah in Delhi and registration here, yes. If neither will be in India for long, marrying in the country of residence may be simpler.
What age rules apply?▼
The bride must be at least 18 and the groom at least 21, shown by passports or other reliable age proof. We do not make exceptions.
Will the nikahnama be in English?▼
Yes. We prepare English documents, with Urdu alongside if the families wish, because foreign authorities need to read them.
Can the walima be held abroad?▼
Yes. The nikah is complete in Delhi. Families often hold the walima wherever it suits them.
Can you advise on the bride's residence visa medical test?▼
Medical tests are set by the destination country. We can tell you what is commonly required, but the sponsor and the destination authority decide.
What if the foreign authority questions the nikah's genuineness?▼
Photographs of the nikah, the registered certificate, witnesses' details and evidence of your relationship help. We can prepare affidavits confirming the facts.
Do you verify the groom's marital status?▼
We require a written disclosure and affidavit from every NRI groom. We encourage the bride's family to verify his passport, residence permit and employment details independently.
Should the bride register with the Indian embassy after arriving?▼
If the country offers registration for Indian nationals, yes. Save the embassy's helpline number and keep her own documents with her.
Can we get the certificate in both English and Urdu?▼
The official registration certificate is issued by the government. Our nikahnama and certificate can carry Urdu alongside English.
Is the apostille valid forever?▼
An apostille authenticates the document; it does not expire. Some authorities want recently issued or recently authenticated documents, so check their rules.
Can we use one apostilled copy for two countries?▼
An apostille is accepted by all Convention countries, but each authority usually keeps the copy you submit. Get several authenticated copies.
What if the groom's employer needs the certificate urgently?▼
Tell us the deadline at the planning stage. We sequence registration and authentication to meet it where appointments allow.
Can the nikah be read at our home with guests?▼
Yes. The nikah can be read wherever the families wish in Delhi. The registration appointment later takes place at the government office.
Do you charge extra for embassy legalisation?▼
Our handling is included; the embassy's own fees are paid at cost and quoted in advance.
Is the NRI package suitable if the groom lives in another Indian city?▼
If both partners live in India, our standard nikah and registration services are usually enough. The NRI package is designed for couples where the certificate must be authenticated for use abroad.
Can you apostille the nikahnama itself?▼
The MEA authenticates public documents. A private nikahnama is not usually apostilled directly; the registered government certificate is what gets authenticated.
How do we start?▼
WhatsApp +91 8376863962 with the destination country, visa type, the NRI partner's travel dates and scans of both passports. We reply with a plan and dates.
What will you refuse?▼
We refuse to read nikahs over video, to conceal an existing marriage, to marry anyone under the legal age, or to provide witnesses.
