Planning to get court married in Delhi? This step-by-step 2026 guide walks you through every stage β from filing the notice to receiving your government marriage certificate. Whether you're a Hindu couple, inter-caste, or inter-religion partners, court marriage is your legally bulletproof option under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
Court marriage is a civil marriage solemnized at the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) Office in Delhi under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. It does not require any religious ceremony and is open to couples of any religion, caste, or no religion at all. The end product is a Government Marriage Certificate β the most powerful, court-valid marriage document in India.
Before applying, ensure you meet these legal conditions:
Visit the SDM Office in Delhi (where either party has resided for at least 30 days). Fill Form-A β Notice of Intended Marriage. Submit along with ID proof, address proof, age proof, photographs, and βΉ100-βΉ150 challan. The SDM enters this in the Marriage Notice Book and publishes it on the notice board.
After your Notice is published, there's a mandatory 30-day waiting period. During this time, anyone can file an objection on legal grounds. If no valid objection is received, you move to the next step. Tip: If you need to skip this wait, consider Arya Samaj Marriage which is same-day.
After the 30 days and any objections cleared, schedule your marriage date. Both parties + 3 witnesses (with ID proof) appear before the Marriage Officer. The couple signs Form-B declaration. Witnesses sign in their presence. The Marriage Officer registers the marriage.
The Marriage Officer issues the Government Marriage Certificate within 7-15 working days. This certificate is in English and Hindi, contains both spouses' details, and bears the SDM's seal and signature. Valid across India and accepted by all embassies, banks, and courts.
If 30 days is too long, consider Arya Samaj Marriage. Vedic wedding at Arya Samaj Mandir Delhi gives you a Mandir Certificate SAME day, followed by SDM registration in 7-15 days. Combined cost: βΉ5,100-βΉ7,100. Read: Arya Samaj vs Court Marriage.
