Quick answer: Hauz Khas (pincode 110016) and its neighbours are among South Delhi's most cosmopolitan areas. They include Green Park, Safdarjung Development Area, Gulmohar Park, Kalu Sarai, Ber Sarai and Katwaria Sarai. Couples here include doctors from AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, researchers and students from IIT Delhi and JNU, founders and professionals from start-ups, and foreign nationals who work in Delhi. Two Hindus, Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists can have an Arya Samaj wedding and register it under the Hindu Marriage Act on the e-District portal, for ₹100 or ₹10,000 with Tatkal. Couples of different religions, and most couples where one partner is a foreign national, use the Special Marriage Act, which has a 30-day notice. Under Delhi's 2026 revenue map, Hauz Khas is in the South district (sub-divisions Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar, Deoli and Mehrauli). "SDM Hauz Khas" no longer exists as a sub-division name, and the portal allocates the office by address. This guide also sets out plainly what the law does and does not yet allow for same-sex and transgender couples, since that question comes up here more than anywhere else we serve.
Key takeaways
- From 1 January 2026, Hauz Khas is in the South district (sub-divisions Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar, Deoli, Mehrauli); "SDM Hauz Khas" is outdated and e-District allocates by address.
- Two Hindus: Arya Samaj + Hindu Marriage Act registration; different religions or a foreign partner: Special Marriage Act with a 30-day notice.
- Two foreign nationals living in Delhi can marry under the Special Marriage Act with passports, valid visas and single-status documents.
- Same-sex marriage is not recognised in India at present (Supriyo, 2023; review dismissed January 2025); transgender persons in heterosexual relationships can marry under existing laws.
- Live-in relationships are lawful but are not registered marriages; make a will and update nominations after marriage.

Hauz Khas takes its name from the royal tank built by Alauddin Khalji at the start of the fourteenth century, and its medieval madrasa and tombs still stand over the lake in the Deer Park. Around this old core, modern South Delhi grew up: the planned colonies of Hauz Khas Enclave, Green Park and Safdarjung Development Area, the restaurants and studios of Hauz Khas Village, and the older urban villages of Kalu Sarai, Ber Sarai and Katwaria Sarai where students rent rooms. Within a short distance are IIT Delhi, AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, JNU and a cluster of research institutes, coaching centres and start-up offices.
The couples who come to us from here are usually well informed. They have often read the law themselves, and their questions are precise. A resident doctor wants to know whether she can marry during her residency without upsetting her department. A PhD scholar from Kerala wants to marry a colleague from Punjab of a different religion. A founder wants to understand whether marriage affects the shares in his company. A French engineer working in Delhi wants to marry his Indian partner. Two women who have lived together for years want to know what, if anything, they can do legally. This guide tries to answer each of these honestly.

Hauz Khas Under the 2026 District Map
On 1 January 2026, Delhi's revenue administration moved from 11 districts and 33 sub-divisions to 13 districts and 39 sub-divisions, aligned with municipal zones, under a Revenue Department notification dated 25 December 2025. Hauz Khas was previously a well-known sub-division of the South district. Under the new map, the South district's sub-divisions are Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar, Deoli and Mehrauli; Hauz Khas is not one of the names.
| Before 2026 | From 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|
| Hauz Khas was a sub-division of the South district | South district, sub-divisions Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar, Deoli and Mehrauli |
| 11 districts, 33 sub-divisions | 13 districts, 39 sub-divisions |
| Many pages still say "SDM Hauz Khas" | The portal allocates by address; follow the appointment slip |
Most Hauz Khas addresses are likely to be allocated to a nearby South district sub-division such as Malviya Nagar, but we cannot promise which: some pockets near AIIMS or Safdarjung Enclave border other districts. Certificates issued before 2026 by the old Hauz Khas office remain valid.
Which Office Registers Your Marriage
- Hindu Marriage Act registration: the office allocated on e-District for the Delhi address of either partner, or the place in Delhi where the marriage was performed.
- Special Marriage Act: the Marriage Officer of the district where at least one partner has lived for 30 days or more before notice. For couples with a foreign partner, this is often the Indian partner's address, though a foreign national with documented Delhi residence can also qualify.
- Anand Karaj: Sikh couples can also register under the Delhi Anand Marriages Rules, 2018.
Legal Routes
| Couple | Usual route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Two Hindus, Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists | Arya Samaj wedding + Hindu Marriage Act registration | Ceremony same day; certificate 1–2 weeks (Tatkal 1–2 working days) |
| Different religions | Special Marriage Act | About 35–60 days |
| Indian + foreign national | Usually Special Marriage Act | About 35–60 days, plus foreign documents |
| Two foreign nationals living in Delhi | Special Marriage Act (or their own country's consular options, where available) | About 35–60 days |
| Transgender person in a heterosexual relationship | Existing marriage laws, per the Supreme Court in 2023 | As for the chosen route |
| Same-sex couple | No marriage route under Indian law at present | — |
Doctors and Hospital Staff
AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital sit on either side of Aurobindo Marg, and a large share of their doctors, nurses and technicians live in and around Hauz Khas, Green Park, SDA and Kidwai Nagar. Many of our couples here are resident doctors, often marrying another doctor. Their constraints are practical:
- Time: duty rosters leave little room. An Arya Samaj ceremony can be held on an off day, and registration needs one morning, for both partners and the witnesses. Swap duties early.
- Hostel address: residents in hospital hostels can use a hostel allotment letter or a certificate from the hostel warden or administration, with their institute ID and an affidavit. Your home Aadhaar is valid ID.
- Service records: doctors in central government institutions are usually subject to service conduct rules, which bar bigamy and require intimation of marriage to a foreign national. Submit the certificate to your administration for records, medical cover and nominations.
- Different cities: doctors often marry someone whose residency or job is in another city. You can marry in Delhi on the basis of either partner's Delhi address or a Delhi place of marriage.
- Surnames and registration: changing a surname after marriage affects medical council registration, degree certificates and hospital IDs. Many doctors keep their surname professionally. If you change it, update your records carefully in the right order, starting with the passport and Aadhaar.
Researchers, PhD Scholars and Students
IIT Delhi, JNU and the research institutes nearby bring students and scholars from every state and many countries. Couples who meet on campus often come from different regions, languages and religions.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Can we marry while still studying? | Yes, if the groom is 21 and the bride 18. Marriage does not affect admission or a fellowship, though some fellowships ask you to update personal details |
| What address do we use if we live in a hostel? | A hostel residence certificate from the institute, with your student ID and an affidavit; or your home address |
| Is married housing available? | Some institutes have married scholars' accommodation, allotted on the basis of the marriage certificate and their own rules |
| We are from different religions. Which law? | The Special Marriage Act, without conversion |
| One of us is an international student | Usually the Special Marriage Act, with the student's passport, valid visa and apostilled single-status document |
| We plan postdocs abroad | Register in India and apostille the certificate for dependant visas |
International students should check that their student visa and registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office cover the whole period of notice and solemnisation.
Start-Up Founders and Professionals
Hauz Khas and Green Park have many young founders and professionals, and their questions often go beyond the ceremony:
- Company shares: marriage does not change who owns shares in a company. A spouse does not become a shareholder or director by marrying. If you want to give shares to your spouse, that is a transfer with its own filings and possibly tax consequences.
- Nominations: update nominations on your demat account, mutual funds, provident fund, gratuity and insurance after marriage.
- ESOPs and vesting: these follow the company's plan, not your marital status. If you die, they pass under the plan's rules and the law of succession, which is why a will matters.
- Co-founder spouses: if you and your spouse run a company together, keep your roles and shareholdings documented in the company's records, separate from your marriage.
- Health insurance: most group policies allow a spouse to be added within a fixed window after marriage. Check it the week the certificate is issued.
Marrying a Foreign National Who Lives in Delhi
Many foreigners work in South Delhi, with embassies, international organisations, multinational companies, universities and NGOs, and some marry Indian partners. The Special Marriage Act is the usual route.
- Residence: one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before notice. The Indian partner's address is usually easiest; a foreign national with a registered lease and FRRO registration can also show residence.
- Visa: the foreign partner's visa must be valid through the notice period and solemnisation. Employment, student and research visas usually are; a tourist visa may not cover the timeline.
- Single-status document: a certificate of no impediment, capacity to marry or equivalent from the partner's country, apostilled if that country is an Apostille Convention member, or legalised through its embassy otherwise.
- Previous marriage: a divorce decree or death certificate, authenticated and translated if needed.
- After marriage: the foreign spouse of an Indian citizen can, subject to conditions, apply for an entry (X) visa, and after at least two years of a registered, subsisting marriage, for an OCI card. Rules change; check the Ministry of Home Affairs portals.
If the Indian partner is a government servant, the service conduct rules usually require intimation of marriage to a foreign national. See our Chanakyapuri guide for that, and our foreign documents guide for the paperwork.
Two Foreign Nationals Marrying in Delhi
Two foreign nationals living in Delhi can marry under the Special Marriage Act, which is not limited to Indian citizens. Both need valid passports and visas, single-status documents and proof that at least one of them has lived in the district for 30 days. Some countries also let their nationals marry at their embassy or register a marriage performed in India with their own authorities; ask your embassy what it recognises. For a marriage certificate that will be used back home, ask your country's authorities in advance whether they need an apostille, a legalisation or a translation.
Same-Sex Couples: What the Law Says in 2026
We are asked this question often, and we want to answer it honestly, without false hope and without disrespect.
- Same-sex relationships are lawful. In Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India (2018), the Supreme Court decriminalised consensual same-sex relations between adults.
- Same-sex marriage is not recognised at present. In Supriyo @ Supriya Chakraborty v. Union of India, decided on 17 October 2023, a five-judge Constitution Bench held that it could not read the Special Marriage Act to include same-sex couples, and that recognising such marriages is a matter for Parliament. Review petitions against that judgment were dismissed in January 2025.
- What this means in practice: no Marriage Officer in India can register a marriage between two people of the same sex under the Special Marriage Act, the Hindu Marriage Act or any other marriage law as they stand. Anyone who offers to "arrange" such a registration is misleading you.
- The government committee: following the judgment, the Union government set up a committee in April 2024, chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, to examine practical entitlements for queer couples, such as joint bank accounts, nominations, medical decision-making, ration cards, pensions and succession. In August 2024, the Union Finance Ministry clarified that there is no restriction on members of the queer community opening joint bank accounts or naming a queer partner as nominee. Check the current position with your bank before relying on it.
- What couples can do now: make wills in each other's favour, name each other as nominees where permitted, execute powers of attorney and advance medical directives, and keep records of joint finances. A lawyer can help with these.
- Marriages abroad: a same-sex marriage performed in a country that allows it is not registered as a marriage in India at present.
We do not conduct or register same-sex marriages because the law does not allow it, and we will not take your money for something we cannot lawfully do. If the law changes, we will update this page.
Transgender Persons and Marriage
The Supreme Court in Supriyo also held that transgender persons in heterosexual relationships have the right to marry under existing laws, including personal laws. In practice:
- A transgender woman marrying a man, or a transgender man marrying a woman, can marry under the Hindu Marriage Act (if both are covered by it), the Special Marriage Act or other applicable law.
- Identity documents should reflect the person's gender identity. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 provides for a certificate of identity through the District Magistrate, via the national portal, and for updating other documents.
- Names and gender in affidavits and applications should match the updated identity documents.
- Offices may be unfamiliar with such cases; carry the certificate of identity and, if helpful, a copy of the relevant part of the judgment.
We will help transgender persons in heterosexual relationships marry and register like any other couple, with the respect every couple deserves.
Live-In Relationships
Many Hauz Khas couples live together before they marry, sometimes for years. The law's position:
- Live-in relationships between adults are lawful. The Supreme Court has repeatedly said so.
- A long live-in relationship is not a registered marriage. Courts have sometimes presumed a marriage from long cohabitation for purposes such as maintenance or legitimacy of children, but that is a court's finding in a dispute, not a certificate.
- Protection for women: the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 covers a "relationship in the nature of marriage", so a woman in such a relationship can seek its protections.
- Children: children born in a long live-in relationship have been held entitled to inherit from their parents' self-acquired property.
- When you decide to marry: the process is exactly the same as for anyone else. Your marriage date is the date of the ceremony or solemnisation, not the date you started living together.
If you have lived together and now want the security of a registered marriage, for a visa, a home loan, insurance or simply peace of mind, marriage and registration are straightforward.
Marrying Later in Life
South Delhi has more couples marrying in their late thirties, forties and beyond, whether for the first time, after divorce or after the death of a spouse. The law is the same at any age; the practical points differ.
- Divorced partners: bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree. If the divorce was abroad, have it apostilled or legalised, and take advice if the other party did not take part in the foreign proceedings.
- Widowed partners: bring the former spouse's death certificate.
- Adult children: their consent is not needed, but talking openly and making a will prevent most disputes.
- Existing property and investments: marriage makes the new spouse a legal heir if there is no will. If you want your assets to go differently, for example to children from an earlier marriage, make a will.
- Pensions: for retired employees, whether a spouse married after retirement is covered by family pension depends on the scheme's rules. Check before or soon after marrying.
Agreements, Property and Wills
Professionals with significant assets sometimes ask about prenuptial agreements. The honest position in India:
| Question | General position |
|---|---|
| Are prenuptial agreements legally binding? | There is no specific statute recognising them for most marriages. Courts may look at them as evidence of what the couple agreed, but they cannot override statutory rights such as maintenance |
| Does marriage merge our property? | No. India has no general community-property regime; each spouse keeps what they own unless it is transferred |
| Who inherits without a will? | Under the Hindu Succession Act, a spouse is among the first heirs. For Special Marriage Act couples, the Indian Succession Act generally applies, with some exceptions |
| Does marriage cancel a will? | A Hindu's will is not revoked by marriage, but under the Indian Succession Act marriage can revoke a will for some others. Take advice |
These are general points, not legal advice. A lawyer can help you with a will, a written understanding between you, and nominations.
Arya Samaj + Registration
- Document check: send clear photos of both partners' age proof (birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport; Aadhaar is not proof of age), ID, address proof and photographs, and any divorce or death document.
- Affidavits: date of birth, marital status, religion and free consent, notarised.
- Ceremony: the Vedic ceremony at the mandir, with havan, pheras and saptapadi, takes about 90 minutes. Many South Delhi couples bring a small group of family and friends.
- Online application: we file the Hindu Marriage Act registration on e-District and book the appointment.
- Appointment: both partners and two witnesses attend with originals.
- Certificate: issued once approved.
Since 2022, the Supreme Court and the Allahabad High Court have made clear that a mandir certificate alone is not conclusive proof of marriage. Always complete the registration. See our Arya Samaj court marriage guide.
Special Marriage Act
- Residence: one partner has lived in the district for 30 days before notice.
- Notice: filed online and verified at the Marriage Officer's office, where it is displayed.
- 30-day period: for legal objections only, such as an existing marriage or under-age partner.
- Solemnisation: after 30 days and within three months, before the Marriage Officer and three witnesses.
- Certificate: issued under the Special Marriage Act.
See our comparison guide if you are unsure which Act applies.
Inter-Caste and Inter-Religion Couples
- Inter-caste Hindus: an ordinary Hindu marriage, registered under the Hindu Marriage Act; caste is not on the certificate. Where one partner belongs to a Scheduled Caste, the Dr. Ambedkar scheme (₹2.5 lakh, subject to conditions) and Delhi's ₹50,000 incentive may apply. See our inter-caste guide.
- Different religions: the Special Marriage Act, without conversion. See our inter-religion guide.
- Families who object: adults do not need family permission. If threatened, call 112 or 181, give a written complaint to the police and DCP, and consider a High Court protection petition. See love marriage legal rights.
Witnesses
Hindu Marriage Act registration needs two witnesses; the Special Marriage Act needs three. They must be adults with ID and address proof who genuinely know you: colleagues, friends, flatmates or relatives. Foreign nationals can be witnesses with a passport and proof of address. We do not provide witnesses. See our witness guide.
Tenants in Kalu Sarai, Ber Sarai and Katwaria Sarai
Behind the planned colonies are the urban villages where many students, coaching aspirants and young professionals rent rooms and small flats: Kalu Sarai, Ber Sarai, Katwaria Sarai, Jia Sarai and Ber Sarai's lanes near JNU's old campus. Address proof is the usual difficulty.
| Situation | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Written rent agreement | Notarised or registered agreement, landlord's ID and electricity bill, and your affidavit |
| No written agreement | Ask the landlord to sign a simple notarised agreement; otherwise use your home address |
| Hindu Marriage Act, marriage performed in Delhi | Your home Aadhaar as ID; the Delhi place of marriage supports Delhi registration |
| Special Marriage Act | Proof covering at least 30 days of residence in the district |
Many landlords in these villages are reluctant to give written agreements. Ask early, and explain that it is only for marriage registration. Do not use a friend's address where you do not live; the affidavits are sworn on oath.
Weddings and Receptions in Hauz Khas Village
Hauz Khas Village, with its restaurants and rooftop venues overlooking the lake, is a popular place for small receptions and cocktail evenings after a court or Arya Samaj wedding. Couples sometimes ask whether a ceremony held at such a venue can be registered.
- A Hindu ceremony by customary rites, such as pheras with saptapadi performed by a priest, is a valid marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act wherever it takes place, including a restaurant or banquet venue. Keep photographs and the priest's letter for registration.
- A party, ring exchange or reception is not a marriage, however formal it feels. It cannot be registered.
- A Special Marriage Act marriage is solemnised before the Marriage Officer, at the office or, in some cases, at another place within reasonable distance if the rules and the officer allow it, usually for an additional fee. Ask before planning around this.
- Destination-style celebrations are best treated as celebrations after the legal marriage is complete and registered.
After Marriage: Life as an Indian-Foreign Couple in Delhi
For an Indian and a foreign national who plan to stay in Delhi after marrying, a few practical matters follow the certificate:
- The foreign spouse's visa: an entry (X) visa for the spouse of an Indian citizen can usually be sought, and extended in India under the applicable rules. Keep the certificate, the Indian spouse's passport and proof of address ready.
- FRRO registration: foreigners on long-term visas generally register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office through the e-FRRO system within the prescribed time.
- OCI: after at least two years of a registered, subsisting marriage, the foreign spouse of an Indian citizen can apply for an OCI card, subject to security clearance and conditions.
- Bank accounts: a foreign national resident in India can open accounts under banking rules; a joint account with the Indian spouse is common.
- Property: foreign nationals face restrictions on buying immovable property in India; the Indian spouse usually holds property. Take advice before buying.
- Children: a child born in India to an Indian parent has a claim to Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Act, subject to its conditions; many couples also register the birth with the foreign parent's embassy.
Immigration and citizenship law is specialised and changes often. We help with the marriage and certificate; for visas and citizenship, check the official Ministry of Home Affairs portals or an immigration lawyer.
Inter-Religion Couples From Professional Families
In professional South Delhi families, inter-religion marriages are more often accepted, but families still worry about practical things: which festivals, which name for the children, whose ceremony comes first. The law is simple and gives couples room to decide:
- The Special Marriage Act lets each partner keep their religion. The marriage is secular.
- Religious ceremonies from both traditions can be held as celebrations before or after the legal marriage.
- Children's religion is not fixed by the marriage law; parents decide together. School and official forms record what parents state.
- Succession for couples married under the Special Marriage Act is generally governed by the Indian Succession Act, with some exceptions where both partners are Hindus. A will removes uncertainty.
Why the Certificate Matters in a Hospital
Living next to AIIMS and Safdarjung, Hauz Khas residents know how much hospitals depend on paperwork in an emergency. A registered spouse is generally treated as next of kin for consent to treatment, information about the patient's condition, and decisions when the patient cannot decide. Without a certificate, a partner may find the hospital turning to parents or siblings instead, especially if the families disagree.
- Keep a copy of the certificate on your phone and a printed copy at home.
- Add your spouse to your health insurance within the policy window; hospitals check the policy at admission.
- Consider an advance medical directive. The Supreme Court recognised living wills in 2018 and simplified the procedure in 2023. A directive can name the person you want to make decisions for you.
- For couples the law does not yet let marry, a medical power of attorney or advance directive naming the partner is especially important.
When Parents Live With You
Many South Delhi households include elderly parents, and a marriage changes the family's legal picture in ways worth knowing:
- Maintenance of parents: under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, children have a duty to maintain their parents. Marriage does not change that.
- Parents' property: a son's or daughter's spouse does not acquire rights in the parents' self-acquired house by marrying. Whether the couple can live there depends on the parents' consent and, for a wife, on her right to reside in a shared household under the domestic violence law, which courts have interpreted in several cases.
- Nominations and wills: parents often name a child as nominee. After the child marries, parents may want to review their own wills too.
These are family and legal questions beyond our work, but they come up often enough in conversations with South Delhi families that they are worth mentioning.
Privacy and the Special Marriage Act Notice
Professionals sometimes ask whether the Special Marriage Act notice will expose their marriage to employers or families. The notice of intended marriage is displayed at the Marriage Officer's office for 30 days so that legal objections can be made. Practice on publishing or sending copies has varied between states and over time, and courts have been asked to consider the privacy concerns this raises. Ask us about current practice at your office. For two Hindus, the Hindu Marriage Act route has no public notice at all.
Documents Checklist
| Document | Who | Notes for Hauz Khas couples |
|---|---|---|
| Age proof | Both | Birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport |
| Identity proof | Both | Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence; foreign nationals use their passport |
| Address proof | At least one partner for Delhi | Aadhaar with Delhi address, rent agreement with utility bill, or hostel certificate with affidavit |
| Photographs | Both | Passport-size photos, plus ceremony photos for registration |
| Affidavits | Both | Date of birth, marital status, nationality, religion, consent; notarised |
| Mandir certificate | Couple | For registration after an Arya Samaj ceremony |
| Divorce decree or death certificate | If previously married | Certified copy; foreign decrees apostilled or legalised |
| Foreign national documents | If applicable | Passport, valid visa, FRRO registration if applicable, apostilled single-status document |
| Certificate of identity | Transgender partner, if applicable | Issued under the Transgender Persons Act, 2019, with updated ID |
| Witness documents | Witnesses | ID and address proof |
Names must match across documents. Doctors and academics sometimes use a title or an initial in one document and not another; use the passport spelling and explain any variation in your affidavit.
What Happens at the Appointment
- Both partners and the witnesses arrive at the time on the slip, with originals.
- Staff match originals with the scans on the portal.
- The officer confirms identities and free consent, and asks the witnesses whether they know you.
- For the Hindu Marriage Act, the registration is approved and the certificate follows. For the Special Marriage Act, at the solemnisation appointment you sign the declarations before the Marriage Officer and three witnesses.
Office clothes are fine. Plan for a morning; waiting times vary.
If a foreign partner or witness is attending, bring their original passport and visa page. Staff sometimes ask for a local address and phone number for foreign witnesses too; have them written down.
Arrive a little early; the security check and queue at government offices can take time.

Getting Around
- Hauz Khas is an interchange of the Yellow and Magenta Lines; Green Park and AIIMS are on the Yellow Line, and IIT Delhi on the Magenta Line.
- Aurobindo Marg and Outer Ring Road are heavily congested at peak hours, especially near AIIMS.
- Your office under the 2026 structure is named on your appointment slip; it may not be in Hauz Khas at all.
Common Mistakes
- Going to "SDM Hauz Khas" because an older page says so.
- A foreign partner arriving on a visa that expires before solemnisation.
- Leaving the foreign single-status document until after arrival.
- Assuming a long live-in relationship is the same as a registered marriage.
- Believing someone who offers to register a same-sex marriage in India.
- Name variations across degree certificates, passports and medical registration.
- Missing the company health insurance window to add a spouse.
- Relying on a mandir certificate alone.
- Not making a will when there are significant assets or children from an earlier marriage.
Four Hauz Khas Situations
The two residents
Two resident doctors, one from Kerala and one from Rajasthan, married by Arya Samaj rites on a rare shared day off. They used their hostel certificates and affidavits for address, two colleagues as witnesses, and registered the following week before morning rounds.
The scholars from different faiths
A Hindu PhD scholar and a Muslim postdoctoral researcher married under the Special Marriage Act. His rent agreement in Ber Sarai covered the residence condition. They apostilled the certificate for a postdoc visa abroad.
The French engineer
A French engineer on an employment visa and his Indian partner in Green Park married under the Special Marriage Act. He had obtained his certificate of capacity to marry before arriving, and his visa covered the whole process.
The couple the law cannot yet marry
Two women who had lived together for eight years asked whether they could register a marriage. We explained honestly that Indian law does not currently allow it, and suggested they see a lawyer about wills, nominations and medical powers of attorney. We did not charge them.
Hauz Khas Checklist
- ☐ Groom 21+, bride 18+; neither with a living spouse
- ☐ Route chosen: Hindu Marriage Act for two Hindus; Special Marriage Act for different religions or a foreign partner

How We Help
We check documents by email or WhatsApp for busy doctors and professionals, conduct Arya Samaj ceremonies on weekends and holidays, handle Tatkal registration, guide Special Marriage Act marriages including those with foreign nationals, and arrange apostilles. We tell you honestly when the law does not allow what you are asking for. Everything is confidential. We do not provide witnesses.
Doctors and professionals from Hauz Khas often write to us by email between shifts or late at night. That suits us. Send clear scans of both partners' documents, tell us about any foreign partner or earlier marriage, and we will reply with a short, specific plan and an honest answer if the law does not allow what you are asking.
