Quick answer: Model Town, with Gujranwala Town, Derawal Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Kamla Nagar, GTB Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar and the Azadpur belt around it, is one of north Delhi's oldest planned colonies and one of its busiest student and emigration neighbourhoods. Under Delhi's 2026 revenue map, Model Town is one of three sub-divisions of the Central North district (with Shalimar Bagh and Shakur Basti). Two Hindus, Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists can have an Arya Samaj wedding and register it under the Hindu Marriage Act; Sikh couples can register an Anand Karaj under Delhi's 2018 Rules; interfaith couples who do not want to convert use the Special Marriage Act, with 30 days' residence and a 30-day notice. Couples marrying before a spouse visa or PR application need more than a certificate: registration in both names, apostille or attestation, and honest evidence that the relationship is genuine. Marriages arranged only to obtain a visa are fraud, and we do not touch them. NRI marriage services from ₹6,100; with apostille and embassy attestation ₹30,000.
Key takeaways
- From 1 January 2026 Model Town is one of three sub-divisions of the Central North district, with Shalimar Bagh and Shakur Basti.
- For any spouse visa or PR file you need the government marriage certificate, not only a mandir or gurdwara certificate, plus apostille or embassy attestation.
- Names on the certificate must match both passports exactly – check before leaving the registration office.
- Keep honest evidence that the relationship is genuine; never create documents after the fact, and never agree to a marriage arranged only for a visa.
- Students and tenants prove residence with a rent agreement, tenant verification or updated Aadhaar. We never provide witnesses.

Model Town was laid out in the 1920s and filled after 1947 with families who had lost everything in Punjab and started again in Delhi. Three generations later, the wide roads and old kothis of Model Town I, II and III, Gujranwala Town, Derawal Nagar and Ashok Vihar still belong largely to those families, though many of the children now live in Brampton, Surrey, Melbourne or London. A wedding here often has a visa application behind it, and half the guest list arrives by air.
A short distance away is a different crowd entirely. Delhi University's North Campus, Kamla Nagar's shops, Hudson Lane's cafés, and the coaching institutes and libraries of Mukherjee Nagar and GTB Nagar draw tens of thousands of students from every state, many of them living in PGs and shared rooms for years. And to the west lies Azadpur, whose fruit and vegetable mandi begins work at three in the morning and where whole families run businesses built over decades.
Each of these worlds asks us different questions. A family whose son is in Canada wants to know what a spouse-sponsorship application will demand, and by when. A student couple from two states wants to know whether a PG address is enough. A mandi family wants a ceremony that finishes before the day's trading. This guide answers them, and it is honest about one thing in particular: a marriage arranged only to get someone a visa is fraud in both countries, and no certificate will make it safe. Everything else here is the ordinary, careful paperwork that makes a real marriage easy to prove, in Delhi and abroad.

Model Town Under the 2026 Revenue Map
From 1 January 2026, Delhi's revenue administration was reorganised into 13 districts and 39 sub-divisions. The new Central North district has three sub-divisions: Model Town, Shalimar Bagh and Shakur Basti. Model Town keeps a sub-division in its own name, and addresses in Gujranwala Town, Derawal Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Kamla Nagar, GTB Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar are likely to be allotted to it or to a neighbouring sub-division depending on the exact boundary. The portal decides by address; your appointment slip names the office. Certificates issued before 2026 remain valid.
Which Office Registers Your Marriage?
Apply on the Delhi e-District portal. For Hindu Marriage Act registration, the office can be the one for the place where the marriage was solemnised or where either spouse lives; for the Special Marriage Act, notice goes to the Marriage Officer of the district where at least one of you has lived for the last 30 days. If your wedding is at a banquet hall on the GT Karnal Road or a hotel near Azadpur and you live in Model Town, either address may be usable; we choose the one your documents support best.
The Legal Routes
| Your situation | Route | Waiting period | Our fee |

| Sikh couple after Anand Karaj | Delhi Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2018, or HMA | By appointment | ₹6,000 |

| Both Muslim | Nikah + registration under the Delhi 2014 Order | Nikah same day; registration by appointment | ₹5,000 / ₹6,000 |
Government fees are extra at actual cost. Full list: fees.
Arya Samaj Wedding + Registration
For two Hindus, including Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, the Arya Samaj route is the quickest lawful ceremony: havan, garlands, pheras and saptapadi, about an hour, with the mandir certificate the same day. It suits families whose relatives are flying in for a short visit, and couples who want a simple ceremony without a large function.
The mandir certificate proves the ceremony; the government certificate comes from Hindu Marriage Act registration on e-District, and that is what a passport office, a bank or a visa officer will ask for. Our combined package is ₹7,100. The Supreme Court held in Dolly Rani (2024) that a Hindu marriage needs the essential ceremonies, so a certificate without a real ceremony is worthless, and a visa officer who finds no evidence of a wedding will ask why. See our Arya Samaj marriage page.
Sikh Couples: Anand Karaj
Many families here hold the Anand Karaj at a gurdwara, with the four laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib. Delhi notified the Delhi Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2018, so a Sikh couple can register the marriage as an Anand marriage; registration under the Hindu Marriage Act also remains available, and either certificate is valid proof. Bring the gurdwara's certificate, photographs of the laavan, age proof, ID and address proof of both spouses, and two witnesses. Tell us at the start that yours is an Anand Karaj so the application is filed in the right category, which matters when the certificate will be used abroad.
Special Marriage Act
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 is the civil route for any two adults, whatever their religion, without conversion. At least one of you must have lived in the district for 30 days before notice; the notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections are allowed only on legal grounds such as age, an existing spouse, unsoundness of mind or prohibited relationship; then the marriage is solemnised before the Marriage Officer with three witnesses. Our full service is ₹15,000.
Two practical notes for this neighbourhood. First, the 30-day notice cannot be shortened, so a couple planning around a visa appointment should start early. Second, where a Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist marries a person of another religion under this Act, section 19 severs the Hindu partner from the undivided family and section 21 applies the Indian Succession Act; where both are Hindus, section 21A excludes those effects. In families with jointly held property, discuss this before filing and consider wills. See the SMA vs HMA guide.
Marrying Before a Spouse Visa or PR Application
In this part of Delhi, a great many weddings are followed within weeks by an immigration file: spousal sponsorship for Canada, a partner visa for Australia, a spouse visa for the UK, a dependent visa for a student or worker in Europe or the Gulf. The immigration authority is not interested in how grand the wedding was. It wants to know two things: that the marriage is legally valid, and that the relationship is genuine.
| What they ask for | What to arrange in Delhi |
|---|---|
| Proof of a legally valid marriage | Government marriage certificate from registration, not only a mandir or gurdwara certificate |
| Names exactly as in passports | Check the spelling before signing the register; correct errors immediately |
| Legalisation for use abroad | MEA apostille for Hague Convention countries, or embassy attestation |
| Evidence the relationship is genuine | Photographs over time, communication records, travel, joint finances, family involvement |
| Police clearance | Police Clearance Certificate through the Passport Seva system, where the country requires it |
| Identity and status documents | Passports, birth certificates, divorce decrees or death certificates where either was married before |
Each country's requirements change, so always check the current checklist on the official immigration website of the destination country before you file. We deal with the Indian side: a correctly solemnised marriage, correct registration, clean documents and the apostille or attestation.
Proving a Genuine Relationship
Visa officers who assess spouse applications see thousands of files. They are not looking for romance; they are looking for the ordinary traces that two people who share a life leave behind. If your relationship is real, these exist already; the mistake families make is failing to keep them.
- Photographs over time, not only from the wedding day: the roka or engagement, family meetings, festivals, small outings, with dates.
- Communication records: call logs and messages over months, not a week's worth created after the fact.
- The wedding itself: invitation card, venue booking and payment, caterer's bill, photographs showing both families, the mandir or gurdwara certificate.
- Family involvement: photographs with parents and relatives from both sides, and their names in the invitation.
- Travel: tickets and boarding passes for visits, stamps in the passport.
- Joint arrangements after the marriage: a joint bank account, a shared address, insurance nomination, money transfers, a jointly rented home.
- The registration certificate, obtained promptly after the wedding rather than months later.
Two more practical points. Keep everything in both spouses' possession, not only with the family in India; and never fabricate anything. A single invented document can sink an otherwise genuine application and lead to a finding of misrepresentation, with a ban of several years in many countries.
Marriages Arranged Only for a Visa
It has to be said plainly, because we are asked. Some agents in Delhi offer "paper marriages": a wedding and a certificate arranged so that one person can take another abroad, often in exchange for money, with no intention of living together. Families are sometimes told it is a grey area. It is not.
- Immigration authorities treat a marriage of convenience as fraud. Applications are refused, sponsors are held responsible, and findings of misrepresentation carry multi-year bans and can affect future applications for the whole family.
- Affidavits sworn falsely about the marriage or the parties' intentions are offences under Indian law, as are forged or false documents.
- The person brought abroad in such an arrangement is often the one left most exposed: without status, without family support, and unable to complain without admitting to the arrangement.
- We do not conduct, register or document such marriages, and we do not take cases where we are told or shown that the intention is to obtain a visa rather than to marry.
If you are being pressed into such an arrangement by relatives or an agent, speak to a lawyer, and remember that no visa is worth a fraud finding that follows you for years.
Apostille and Attestation
A marriage certificate issued in Delhi is an Indian public document. To be accepted by a foreign authority it usually needs legalisation.
- Get the certificate, and check every detail against the passports.
- Authentication by the state authority, where required, before the central stage.
- Apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs for countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention. India has been a party since 2005; Canada joined in 2024, and Saudi Arabia in 2022. The UK, the US and Australia are parties.
- Embassy attestation instead of an apostille for countries that are not parties; the UAE has traditionally required this route.
- Translation where the destination requires a certified translation.
Our apostille service is ₹4,500 and embassy attestation ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 depending on the country; the full NRI package, with registration, is ₹30,000. Allow several working days, and more in peak season. See the apostille and visa guide.
Passport, Police Clearance and Name Changes
- Adding a spouse's name to an Indian passport, or reissuing with a changed surname, is done through the Passport Seva portal with the marriage certificate.
- A woman is not required to change her surname. Many keep their maiden name to avoid mismatches with degrees, PAN and employment records. If she does change it, keep one consistent set of records and use the certificate, with a gazette notification where asked.
- Police Clearance Certificates are issued through the Passport Seva system and are required by several countries for spouse and PR applications; police verification is done at your registered address, so make sure the address on your passport is current and someone can receive the visit.
- Address changes: after marriage, align Aadhaar, bank and passport addresses; immigration files with three different addresses invite questions.
When One Partner Is Already Abroad
Many couples here are engaged while one partner is already studying or working overseas. The rules that matter:
- Both must be physically present for a marriage in India, whether Arya Samaj, Anand Karaj, nikah or Special Marriage Act solemnisation, and both must attend the registration appointment.
- A nikah can be performed through a wakil for an absent groom under Muslim law, but registration still requires both spouses at the appointment.
- Plan the visit around the paperwork: wedding early in the trip, registration filed within days, appointment before the return flight, apostille after.
- Do not rely on a video ceremony. Indian registration requires a real marriage and the parties' presence; a video "wedding" creates a file no registrar or visa officer will accept.
- If the visit is too short, it is better to postpone than to rush a wedding without documents. We will tell you honestly whether the dates work.
If the Wedding Takes Place Abroad
Sometimes the wedding happens in Canada, the UK or the Gulf, and the family in Model Town needs the marriage recognised back home, for property, pension or a visa for a parent.
- A marriage validly solemnised under the law of the country where it took place is generally recognised in India, and the foreign certificate is the primary proof.
- Indian citizens marrying abroad can also marry before a Marriage Officer at an Indian mission under the Foreign Marriage Act, 1969, which also provides for registering certain marriages solemnised abroad.
- For use in India, a foreign certificate usually needs apostille or attestation in that country and, where it is not in English, a certified translation.
- Delhi's 2014 Order applies to marriages solemnised in Delhi, so a marriage performed abroad is not registered again here; keep the foreign certificate safe and take attested copies.
- Where a couple wants an Indian certificate as well, the practical route is usually to hold a ceremony in India and register that, which is a separate marriage record and should not be done to create a second, conflicting record of the same marriage.
Foreign Divorce Decrees
A second marriage in Delhi where the earlier marriage was dissolved abroad is a common file here, and it is also the one that most often goes wrong.
- A foreign divorce decree is not automatically valid in India. In Y. Narasimha Rao v. Y. Venkata Lakshmi (1991), the Supreme Court held that a foreign decree is recognised only in limited circumstances, broadly where the court had jurisdiction under the law under which the parties were married and the decree was granted on a ground available under that law, with the other spouse having participated or consented.
- Where the decree does not meet those conditions, remarrying in India can render the second marriage void and expose the person to a bigamy charge.
- Bring the full decree, not a summary; a certified copy, apostilled or attested, with a translation where needed.
- Where there is any doubt, take a lawyer's opinion before the wedding, not after.
The same caution applies to divorces recorded abroad under religious law, and to talaq pronounced abroad. See our guide to NRI marriage in India.
OCI and Other Consequences of Marriage
Many families here ask what a marriage changes for citizenship and residence. The main points, as they stand:
- Marriage does not give Indian citizenship automatically to a foreign spouse, nor does it give a foreign passport to an Indian spouse.
- OCI for a spouse: the spouse of foreign origin of an Indian citizen or of an OCI cardholder may apply for an OCI card where the marriage has been registered and has subsisted for a continuous period of at least two years before the application. The registered certificate is therefore essential, and its date matters.
- Visas: an entry visa for a foreign spouse is a separate application, with its own documents.
- Property: rules on purchase of agricultural land and certain property by non-residents are separate from marriage and should be checked independently.
- Succession: where a couple marries under the Special Marriage Act and one partner is not Hindu, the Indian Succession Act governs their succession; wills prevent most disputes, especially across countries.
Rules change, so check the current requirements on the official portals before applying.
Second Marriages
A divorced or widowed person may remarry once the earlier marriage has legally ended. A Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist needs a certified copy of the final decree; a stamp-paper or panchayat "divorce" does not end a Hindu marriage, except where a recognised custom of divorce applies and can be proved. A Muslim needs the talaqnama, khulanama, mubarat deed or decree, and a woman must have completed her iddat. A Special Marriage Act or Christian marriage ends only by a court decree. A widowed person brings the former spouse's death certificate. Marrying while an earlier marriage subsists is bigamy where monogamy applies, and conversion does not change that.
DU, Mukherjee Nagar and GTB Nagar
North Campus and the coaching belt bring together students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, the North East and the South, often living here for three to six years. Couples form, and when they decide to marry, usually quietly, their questions are practical.
- Can we marry while studying? Yes, if both are adults: groom 21, bride 18. No college, hostel or institute permission is needed, and nobody is informed.
- Will it affect an exam or a government job application? No. Marriage does not bar you from any exam; just declare your marital status truthfully when a form asks.
- Do we need our parents' consent? No. Many couples choose to tell their families, and we encourage that where it is safe, but the law does not require consent.
- Can we marry in Delhi when both families are elsewhere? Yes. An Arya Samaj wedding can be held here; registration needs the wedding to have been performed in Delhi or Delhi residence of one of you.
- Is it confidential? Yes. We do not contact families, colleges or employers.
Address Proof for Students and Tenants
| Proof | How to get it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rent or PG agreement | Written agreement from the owner, notarised if possible | Include the owner's ID |
| Police tenant verification | Filed online by owner or tenant | Required anyway; strong support |
| Aadhaar address update | Online or at a centre, using the rent agreement | Takes days; then Aadhaar alone suffices |
| Hostel or institute letter | From the warden or administration | Helps with an affidavit |
| Bank statement | Update your bank's address to the Delhi one | Widely accepted |
| The other partner's Delhi proof | Where one of you has a solid address | One spouse's proof is enough for registration |
For the Special Marriage Act, the 30 days' residence must be genuine. Do not borrow an address; a false declaration is an offence and can undo the marriage's registration.
Azadpur, Traders and Early-Morning Work
The Azadpur mandi works through the night and into the morning, and the families around it run transport, commission agencies, cold stores and shops on the same clock. Weddings here are planned around trade, not the other way round.
- We conduct Arya Samaj ceremonies early in the morning or late in the afternoon, whichever fits your working day, and check documents on WhatsApp the evening before.
- Registration appointments can usually be taken in the first slots of the morning; we tell you the realistic time the office will take.
- For business families, plan the paperwork that follows the marriage: nominations in bank and insurance records, partnership or firm records where a spouse becomes a partner, and a will where property is involved.
- Where a family firm or joint property exists and one partner is not Hindu, the Special Marriage Act's section 19 and section 21 consequences matter; take advice before filing.
Old Colonies, Builder Floors and Property
Model Town, Gujranwala Town and Derawal Nagar are largely old plots on which builder floors have been constructed and sold separately; Ashok Vihar has DDA housing; Kamla Nagar and GTB Nagar have a mix of old houses and rented accommodation. For marriage registration none of this matters: the registrar wants proof of residence, not ownership.
- Aadhaar or voter ID with the current address is the simplest proof.
- An electricity or water bill in a parent's name works with a ration card, family ID or affidavit showing the relationship.
- Tenants use a rent agreement with police verification.
- Write the address exactly as in your documents: block, plot or flat number, floor and colony name, consistently across the application, affidavits and certificate. Visa officers compare addresses across documents closely.
Inter-Caste and Inter-Religion Couples
Inter-caste marriages are common in this part of Delhi and entirely lawful: any two Hindus who meet the Act's conditions may marry, whatever their caste, with an Arya Samaj wedding and Hindu Marriage Act registration. Where one spouse is from a Scheduled Caste and the other is not, the couple may be eligible for the ₹2.5 lakh incentive under the Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages, subject to its current conditions, including registration under the Hindu Marriage Act and it being the first marriage of both.
Interfaith couples who do not want either partner to convert use the Special Marriage Act. Conversion, if it happens, must be genuine; it never dissolves an existing marriage, as the Supreme Court held in Sarla Mudgal (1995), and we do not conduct conversions arranged as a formality. See our inter-caste marriage and inter-religion marriage services.
Muslim Couples
Muslim families in and around this part of north Delhi marry by nikah: two adults free to marry, free consent, mahr, and the proposal and acceptance before witnesses. Our own Qazi reads nikahs with nikahnama and certificate for ₹5,000. Delhi law requires registration under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 within 60 days, with a ₹500 fee for the next 60 days and a ₹1,000 penalty after that. Register under that Order rather than the Special Marriage Act, which would move succession to the Indian Succession Act; the Delhi High Court directed online registration of Muslim marriages under the 2014 Order in Faizan Ayubi (2024). For a spouse visa, the nikahnama alone is rarely enough: get the government certificate and, where needed, the apostille. See our nikah registration service.
If Your Families Oppose
Adults may marry by choice. The Supreme Court directed police protection for inter-caste and inter-religion couples in Lata Singh (2006), held in Shakti Vahini (2018) that no family or community body may interfere with the marriage of consenting adults, and in Shafin Jahan (2018) that the choice of a partner is part of personal liberty. Delhi Police has special cells for threatened couples, and the Delhi High Court routinely orders protection. Keep documents with you, leave copies with a friend, choose supportive witnesses, register promptly, record threats, and call 112 in an emergency or 181 for the women's helpline. See our love marriage service.
Age
The groom must be at least 21 and the bride 18 on the wedding day, proved by a Class 10 certificate, birth certificate or passport; Aadhaar is identity proof, not reliable age proof. We never conduct a marriage where either party is under age. See the marriage age guide.
Witnesses
Two witnesses for Hindu Marriage Act or Anand registration, three for the Special Marriage Act, and for a nikah as the school followed requires. They bring photo ID and address proof and must actually know you. For NRI couples, choose witnesses who will still be in Delhi on the appointment day, not relatives flying out the next morning.
We do not provide witnesses. A person who does not know you is not a real witness, and a visa officer may later ask who they were. Bring your own. See the witness requirements guide.
Documents Checklist
| Document | Who | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Age proof | Both | Class 10 certificate, birth certificate or passport |
| Photo ID | Both | Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, driving licence or PAN |
| Address proof | At least one in Delhi; 30 days' residence for SMA | Aadhaar, voter ID, bill with relationship proof, rent agreement with tenant verification |
| Passport | NRI or foreign partner, and anyone applying for a visa | All pages with stamps and visas |
| Photographs | Both | Passport size, plus clear ceremony photographs |
| Ceremony proof | For registration | Arya Samaj or gurdwara certificate, nikahnama, wedding card, venue address |
| Affidavits | Both | Age, marital status, nationality; one-and-same-person where names differ |
| Divorce decree or death certificate | If married before | Certified copy; foreign decrees translated |
| Witnesses' ID and address proof | Each witness | Two for HMA, three for SMA |
Full list: documents required for court marriage in Delhi.
At the Appointment
Both spouses and the witnesses attend the office named on the slip with all originals. The officer compares originals with the uploads, confirms identity, and asks simple questions: when and where you married, who performed the ceremony, whether either was married before, and whether you married of your own will. Witnesses say how they know you. If everything is in order you sign the register and the certificate is issued, often digitally, the same day or within a few days. Read every line of the certificate before you leave: for a visa file, a single wrong letter in a name causes weeks of delay.

Putting the Visa File Together: A Working Order
Families here often ask for one list, in order, so that nothing is left to the last week. This is the sequence we use with couples whose marriage will be followed by an immigration application.
- Two months before: both partners' documents checked, including passports, age proof, and any divorce decree or death certificate. Fix what is weak now: a missing Class 10 certificate, an old address on Aadhaar, a name spelt two ways.
- Six weeks before: decide the route and the venue, and confirm two witnesses who live in Delhi and will be available on a weekday for the registration appointment.
- Four weeks before: if the Special Marriage Act applies, the residence must already be genuine and the notice filed, because it runs for 30 days.
- Wedding week: collect the invitation, the venue bill, the ceremony certificate and clear photographs showing both families. Ask the photographer for a handful of images the same evening.
- Within days of the wedding: file the registration application and take the earliest appointment both of you can attend.
- Appointment day: originals, photocopies, witnesses, and time to read the certificate against both passports before leaving.
- The following week: apostille or attestation, digital copies in both spouses' email, Police Clearance Certificate if the destination requires one.
- Ongoing: keep building the ordinary record of a shared life: transfers, calls, visits, a joint account, insurance nomination, a shared address.
Couples who follow this order almost never need an emergency, and they never have to explain to a visa officer why the certificate was issued months after the wedding.
Budgeting for the Paperwork
The wedding budget usually accounts for the venue and the clothes, and forgets the file. A rough planning list for a marriage that will be used abroad:
- Government registration fee and, where used, Tatkal;
- e-stamp and notary charges for affidavits;
- our service fee for the route you choose;
- MEA apostille, or embassy attestation, per document;
- certified translation, where the destination requires it;
- Police Clearance Certificate fees;
- passport reissue if a name or spouse entry is added;
- courier and, for some countries, visa application fees.
None of these is large by itself, and together they are a fraction of a wedding's cost, but they arrive in the weeks after the wedding, when families have stopped budgeting. Set the money aside in advance.
Timeline
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Document check | An evening on WhatsApp |
| Arya Samaj wedding or nikah | Same day once documents are ready |
| Registration | Depends on the appointment; Tatkal faster where available |
| Special Marriage Act | 30 days' residence, 30 days' notice, then solemnisation |
| MEA apostille | Several working days after the certificate |
| Embassy attestation | Longer; varies by country |
Getting Around
The Yellow Line runs through the area with stations at Model Town, Azadpur, GTB Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya, and the Pink Line meets it at Azadpur. Traffic on the Outer Ring Road and around the Azadpur mandi is heavy in the early morning and evening, so take morning appointments and travel by metro where possible; tell your witnesses to do the same. Pickup and drop within Delhi NCR is ₹1,500 if needed.
Common Mistakes
- Relying on the mandir or gurdwara certificate alone for a visa file.
- Letting the NRI partner fly out before the registration appointment.
- Name spellings that differ from the passports, discovered at the visa stage.
- Applying for apostille at the last minute before a visa deadline.
- Creating "evidence" of a relationship after the fact, which is misrepresentation.
- Agreeing to a paper marriage for a visa.
- Assuming the Special Marriage Act notice can be shortened.
- Using a borrowed address for the 30-day residence requirement.
- Aadhaar as the only age proof.
- Witnesses who cannot attend or who do not really know the couple.
After Registration
- Check the certificate against both passports, letter by letter.
- Apply for apostille or attestation if the certificate will be used abroad.
- Update passport (spouse's name or surname), Aadhaar, bank nominations, insurance and, for employees, HR records.
- Keep digital copies in both spouses' email, not only with family in India.
- Start collecting joint-life evidence: shared address, joint account, transfers, travel.
- Interfaith couples married under the SMA: consider wills.
Five Model Town Situations
The Canada sponsorship
A groom settled in Brampton came home for three weeks. The couple married at an Arya Samaj mandir on day three, we filed for registration on day five, and they attended the appointment on day twelve with two cousins living in Delhi as witnesses. The certificate was apostilled after he left, and the sponsorship file included the invitation, venue bill, photographs with both families and a year of call records.
The spelling that cost six weeks
A bride's name appeared as "Simranjeet" on her passport and "Simranjit" on the marriage certificate, and nobody noticed until the visa stage. The correction took a fresh application to the issuing office and several weeks. Now we read the certificate aloud against both passports before anyone leaves the office.
The agent's offer
A family was approached by an agent who offered to arrange a marriage for their daughter to a man with PR abroad, with a payment and an understanding that the couple would separate after she landed. They asked us to do the paperwork. We declined and explained what a misrepresentation finding would mean for her, and for her brother's student visa application.
The Mukherjee Nagar couple
Two aspirants from different states, both adults, had been together for two years. She updated her Aadhaar to her PG address with a notarised agreement and tenant verification. They married at an Arya Samaj mandir with two friends as witnesses and registered on her Delhi address. Their families were told three months later.
The mandi family's morning wedding
A family in the Azadpur trade could not spare an evening in the season. We conducted the ceremony at seven in the morning, the family returned to work by ten, and the registration appointment was taken in the first slot ten days later.
