Quick answer: Couples from Badarpur (pincode 110044, on Mathura Road at the Faridabad border) usually marry in one of two ways. If both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist, they have an Arya Samaj wedding on the day they choose and then register it under the Hindu Marriage Act on the Delhi e-District portal. The fee is ₹100, or ₹10,000 for Tatkal, and the certificate usually comes in one to two weeks, or one to two working days with Tatkal. Couples of different religions marry under the Special Marriage Act, which has a 30-day notice and takes about 35 to 60 days. 2026 update: Delhi's revenue map changed on 1 January 2026. Badarpur is now a sub-division of the South East district, alongside Jangpura and Kalkaji. Older pages that send Badarpur couples to "SDM Sarita Vihar" are out of date. The biggest practical issue for Badarpur couples is address proof: many live in rented rooms in Molarbund, Jaitpur or Meethapur, and their Aadhaar still shows a home-state address.
Key takeaways
- From 1 January 2026, Badarpur is its own sub-division of the South East district; older "SDM Sarita Vihar" references are outdated.
- Two Hindus: Arya Samaj wedding + Hindu Marriage Act registration (₹100; Tatkal ₹10,000). Different religions: Special Marriage Act.
- Tenants: fix Delhi address proof first — updated Aadhaar or a rent agreement with the landlord's bill.
- Partner in Faridabad or Noida? Decide which state registers the marriage before the wedding.
- Our prices: ₹5,100 wedding, ₹7,100 with registration, ₹15,000 Special Marriage Act.

Badarpur is a working area. It sits at the south-eastern edge of Delhi where Mathura Road crosses into Faridabad, and around it are some of Delhi's densest residential pockets: Molarbund, Jaitpur, Meethapur, Pul Pehlad Pur, Tajpur and Madanpur Khadar. Many residents came to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana for jobs in factories, warehouses, transport, security, retail and the offices of Faridabad, Noida and Gurugram. Others have lived here for generations in the old villages that the city grew around.
For marriage, that mix creates a very particular set of questions. Should a couple from Bihar marry in Delhi or back home? Which address counts when you rent a room here but your Aadhaar shows your village? Can a Faridabad bride and a Badarpur groom register in Delhi? What if you work shifts and cannot take a day off? This guide answers those questions. For the general Delhi picture, see court marriage in Delhi. For neighbouring areas, see Sarita Vihar and Kalkaji.
Badarpur at a Glance
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Location | South-eastern edge of Delhi on Mathura Road (NH-19), at the Faridabad border |
| Pincode | 110044 (Badarpur); nearby areas such as Jaitpur and Madanpur Khadar may use different pincodes |
| Nearby pockets | Molarbund, Jaitpur, Meethapur, Pul Pehlad Pur, Tajpur, Madanpur Khadar, Tughlakabad Extension, Sarita Vihar |
| Revenue district from 1 January 2026 | South East Delhi (sub-divisions: Jangpura, Kalkaji, Badarpur) |
| Metro | Badarpur Border, Sarai and Tughlakabad (Violet Line); Violet Line continues into Faridabad |
| Neighbouring states | Haryana (Faridabad) directly south; Uttar Pradesh (Noida) across the Yamuna via Kalindi Kunj |
| Typical residents | Long-time village families, migrant workers and families from other states, commuters to Faridabad, Noida and Gurugram |
Badarpur Under the 2026 District Map
From 1 January 2026, Delhi's revenue administration moved from 11 districts and 33 sub-divisions to 13 districts and 39 sub-divisions, with boundaries aligned to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's zones. This followed a Revenue Department notification dated 25 December 2025. Three new districts were created, and Shahdara district was dissolved.
For Badarpur, the change is significant. Before 2026, Badarpur addresses were commonly handled by the Sarita Vihar sub-division, which is why older pages talk about "SDM Sarita Vihar / Badarpur". Under the new structure, Badarpur is itself one of the three sub-divisions of the South East district, with Jangpura and Kalkaji. Sarita Vihar no longer appears as a separate sub-division in the published list.
| Before 2026 | From 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|
| Badarpur files commonly handled by SDM Sarita Vihar | Badarpur is its own sub-division in South East district |
| 11 districts, 33 sub-divisions | 13 districts, 39 sub-divisions |
| Revenue and MCD boundaries often mismatched | Aligned with MCD zones |
Certificates issued by the old offices before 2026 remain valid. The change only affects where new applications go.
Which Office Registers Your Marriage
The e-District portal allocates the office from the address you enter, so the reliable way to know is to check there. As a guide:
- Most Badarpur, Molarbund, Meethapur and Pul Pehlad Pur addresses: expected to fall under the Badarpur sub-division of South East district.
- Jaitpur, Madanpur Khadar, Sarita Vihar and Tughlakabad pockets: generally South East district too, but the exact sub-division depends on the new boundaries; check on the portal.
- If you married at a mandir elsewhere in Delhi: Hindu Marriage Act registration may also be possible at the office for the place of marriage.
- Special Marriage Act: the Marriage Officer of the district where at least one partner has lived for 30 days before notice.
Check the office address on your appointment slip. District offices are being consolidated into mini secretariats under the reorganisation, and locations may change.
Legal Routes for Badarpur Couples
| Couple | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Both Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist | Arya Samaj wedding + Hindu Marriage Act registration | Wedding on chosen day; certificate in 1–2 weeks (Tatkal 1–2 working days) |
| Already married by Hindu rites, not registered | Registration of the existing marriage | 1–2 weeks |
| Different religions, no conversion | Special Marriage Act | About 35–60 days |
Couples Who Moved to Badarpur for Work
A large share of the couples who call us from Badarpur are not from Delhi originally. Typical situations:
- Both partners work in Delhi or Faridabad, both from the same home state, and want to marry here rather than travel home.
- They met in Delhi at work; one is from Bihar and the other from Uttar Pradesh or Rajasthan.
- Their families back home do not know, or do not agree.
- They have been living together and now want to marry and register properly, often because of a job, a child or a rented flat.
The law does not require you to marry in your home state. Two eligible Hindus can marry by Arya Samaj rites in Delhi, and couples of different religions can use the Special Marriage Act in Delhi if one partner has lived here for 30 days. The practical questions are address proof and which state should register the marriage, covered next.
Address Proof for Tenants
This is where most Badarpur files get stuck. Many tenants in Molarbund, Jaitpur and Meethapur have no written rent agreement, pay rent in cash, and have an Aadhaar that still shows their village address.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar already shows your Badarpur address | Usually enough |
| Renting with no agreement | Make a rent agreement (notarised, or registered where required) and get a copy of the landlord's electricity bill; update Aadhaar if you can |
| Aadhaar shows home-state address, no Delhi proof | Update Aadhaar to the Delhi address before applying (takes some days), or use the partner whose Delhi address is documented |
| Living in company or hostel accommodation | An employer's letter may help with some offices; a rent agreement or updated Aadhaar is more reliable |
| Living with relatives | Their address proof with an affidavit or no-objection letter, and your Aadhaar if updated |
For the Special Marriage Act, residence of at least 30 days must be real and provable. For the Hindu Marriage Act route, one partner's documented Delhi address, or the place of marriage in Delhi, is usually enough for registration here. See documents required for all alternatives.
Marry in Delhi or in Your Home State?
| Point | Marry and register in Delhi | Marry and register in home state |
|---|---|---|
| Travel and leave | No travel; fits around work | Needs leave and travel |
| Privacy from home community | Higher | Lower |
| Family participation | Harder if family is far away | Easier |
| Address proof | Needs Delhi address proof for one partner, or Delhi place of marriage | Home address proof usually already in order |
| Validity of certificate | Valid all over India | Valid all over India |
Both are equally valid. A Delhi certificate works in Bihar or Uttar Pradesh and vice versa. The deciding factor is usually address proof and whether families will attend.
Partners From Faridabad and Haryana
Badarpur and Faridabad are practically one urban area, and many marriages cross the border. The key question is which state registers the marriage.
- Wedding in Delhi, one partner living in Badarpur: register in Delhi on e-District.
- Wedding in Delhi, both living in Faridabad: Delhi registration may be possible on the basis of the place of marriage, depending on the portal's rules; otherwise register in Haryana.
- Wedding in Faridabad: register in Haryana under the Haryana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008, through Haryana's online system.
- Different religions: the Special Marriage Act in the district where one partner has lived for 30 days before notice.
Haryana also has a law regulating religious conversion, so couples of different religions should not treat conversion as a shortcut. See inter-religion marriage.
Partners From Noida and Uttar Pradesh
Across the Yamuna via Kalindi Kunj lies Noida. The same principle applies: a Delhi wedding with a Delhi-resident partner is registered in Delhi, while a wedding in Uttar Pradesh is registered under Uttar Pradesh's rules. Uttar Pradesh's Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 requires prior notice before conversion, so inter-religion couples with a partner in UP should use the Special Marriage Act rather than conversion, or take legal advice first.
Arya Samaj Wedding + Registration, Step by Step
- First message: send both partners' ages, religions, current addresses, home states and whether either was married before.
- Document check: send photos of age, identity and address proofs; we tell you if the Delhi address proof needs fixing.
- Pick a date: any day; Sunday is popular with factory workers but busier.
- Wedding day: originals checked, affidavits signed, the Vedic ceremony with saptapadi, mandir certificate issued.
- Apply on e-District under the Hindu Marriage Act for the office allocated to your address or place of marriage.
- Appointment: both partners and two witnesses with originals; ₹100 or ₹10,000 Tatkal.
- Certificate: check spellings and dates before leaving.
What happens in the ceremony is explained in our Arya Samaj marriage guide.
Special Marriage Act From Badarpur
- At least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before notice, with proof.
- Notice is filed online, verified in person and displayed for 30 days; a copy may go to the other partner's home district, including in another state.
- Objections only on legal grounds; after 30 days and within three months, marriage before the officer with three witnesses.
Because the notice may be sent to a home district in Bihar or UP, couples whose families oppose should plan for that. See process step by step.
Planning Around Shift Work
Many Badarpur couples work shifts in factories, warehouses, hospitals or security, and taking a day off is not easy. What helps:
- Book the ceremony on your weekly off. Arya Samaj weddings can be held on any day, including Sundays.
- Registration needs a working day. Ask for a morning slot and arrange a half-day or shift swap in advance.
- Witnesses work shifts too. Confirm their availability before booking the appointment.
- Tatkal when the calendar is fixed. If you can only get one specific day off, Tatkal gives an appointment within one to two working days of applying.
- Document check by phone. Send scans after work; you do not need to visit us for the check.
Age Proof
The groom must be 21 and the bride 18 on the wedding day. Workers from other states sometimes have only an Aadhaar with a year of birth, or school certificates left at home. Ask family to send a photo of the Class 10 certificate, get a copy from the board or DigiLocker, or use a birth certificate or passport. If the birth was never registered, delayed registration must be done in the state where the person was born, which takes time. See legal marriage age.
Witnesses When Your Family Is Far Away
You need two adult witnesses for Hindu Marriage Act registration and three for the Special Marriage Act. For couples whose relatives live in another state, the natural choices are colleagues, friends from work, roommates, neighbours or a relative living in Delhi or Faridabad. They need valid ID and address proof and should genuinely know you. We do not provide witnesses. Witnesses supplied by strangers do not know the couple and weaken the evidence of the marriage. See witness rules.
When Families Oppose
For couples far from home, family opposition often arrives by phone: pressure to return, threats, or a missing-person complaint filed back in the home state. The legal position:
- Adults can marry without family permission.
- A complaint about an adult who married by choice usually closes once the adult makes a clear statement.
- You can submit a written protection request to the local police station and the DCP of the South East police district, and seek High Court protection if needed.
- In an emergency, dial 112.
See love marriage legal rights for complaints, habeas corpus and protection.
Inter-Caste and Inter-Religion Couples
Inter-caste marriages between Hindus are straightforward by Arya Samaj rites, and SC and non-SC couples may qualify for the Dr. Ambedkar incentive of ₹2.5 lakh if they register and apply within a year. See inter-caste marriage. Couples of different religions should use the Special Marriage Act; with families in states that regulate conversion, conversion only to marry is especially risky.
From Living Together to Marriage
Many Badarpur couples come to us after living together for months or years. Adults living together by choice are not breaking any law, but a live-in relationship does not give all the protections of marriage. Couples usually decide to marry when:
- a child is born or expected, and they want the child's records to show both parents clearly;
- one partner's employer offers medical cover, provident fund or housing for a spouse;
- a landlord or housing society asks for proof of marriage;
- families start to accept the relationship;
- one partner wants the security of maintenance and inheritance rights.
The process is the same as for any couple: an Arya Samaj wedding and registration for two Hindus, or the Special Marriage Act for different religions. The marriage date will be the date of the ceremony, not the date you started living together. Children born before the marriage are still entitled to maintenance and have legal protections; take advice if their records need correcting.
Married Back Home, Now Living in Badarpur
Another common situation: a couple married by Hindu rites in their home village years ago, never registered, and now live and work in Delhi. When they need a certificate for a job, a bank, a school admission or a passport, they ask whether they can register in Delhi.
- Registration usually follows the place of marriage or residence. Delhi registration of a marriage that took place in another state is possible only if the portal's jurisdiction rules allow it on the basis of your Delhi residence. Otherwise, register in the home state.
- Evidence of the ceremony is essential: photographs, invitation card, affidavits and witnesses who attended.
- Do not hold a second wedding in Delhi to get a Delhi certificate with a new date. It can create two conflicting records and problems with visas and property later.
Tell us where and when you married and where you both live now, and we will say which office can register it.
Benefits That Need a Marriage Certificate
For working couples, the certificate is often the key to benefits they are already paying for:
| Benefit | Why the certificate matters |
|---|---|
| Employees' Provident Fund nomination | Adding a spouse as family nominee |
| ESIC medical benefits | Adding a spouse as a dependant for medical cover |
| Employer health insurance | Spouse coverage usually needs proof of marriage |
| Ration card | Adding a spouse; the One Nation One Ration Card system lets migrant families draw rations away from their home state |
| Bank accounts and insurance | Nomination and claims |
| Children's birth certificates and school admissions | Parents' details |
| Passport | Adding a spouse's name |
Registering the marriage is a one-time step that makes all of these easier.
What Happens at the Appointment
- Arrive early with both partners, two witnesses, all originals and copies.
- Staff check the originals against the uploaded documents.
- The officer confirms identities, ages and the marriage; witnesses may be asked how they know you.
- Everyone signs the register.
- The certificate is issued on the day or soon after and can be downloaded.
If a document is missing, the officer will say what is needed. Fix it and return; arguing rarely helps.
Owners in Unauthorised Colonies
Many homes around Badarpur, Jaitpur and Molarbund stand in colonies that grew without formal approval. Families who own such houses sometimes have only a general power of attorney, an agreement to sell or a will instead of a registered sale deed. Under the PM-UDAY scheme, the government has been conferring ownership rights on residents of eligible unauthorised colonies in Delhi, and some families now hold conveyance deeds or authorisation slips. For marriage registration, though, you rarely need property papers at all:
- An Aadhaar or voter ID showing the house address is usually the simplest address proof.
- An electricity or water bill in a family member's name, with proof of relationship and an affidavit, is commonly accepted.
- Property documents are only helpful if other proofs are missing; do not delay your marriage trying to regularise property.
When One Partner Works Abroad
Some Badarpur families have members working in the Gulf, often in construction, driving or hospitality. When one partner comes home on short leave to marry:
- Both partners must be present for the wedding and the registration appointment.
- If both are Hindu, the Arya Samaj wedding can be held soon after arrival and Tatkal registration can produce the certificate within days.
- For a family visa in the UAE, Qatar or Kuwait, the certificate is attested by the Ministry of External Affairs and then by that country's embassy, because these countries do not accept an apostille. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept an apostille.
- Check the partner's passport name matches the marriage certificate exactly.
See NRI marriage and certificate apostille for visa.
Commuters to Gurugram, Noida and Faridabad
Office workers who commute out of Badarpur face a different constraint: long travel times and fixed office hours. Practical tips from the couples we help:
- Do the document check by WhatsApp in the evening; you do not need to visit anyone for it.
- Choose a Saturday or Sunday for the Arya Samaj ceremony.
- For the registration appointment, a morning slot usually means half a day of leave.
- If your company provides spouse medical cover, ask HR in advance exactly which document they need and in what name format, and make sure the certificate matches.
- Keep a digital copy of the certificate ready for HR, the bank and the passport office.
Families Who Have Lived Here for Generations
Not every Badarpur couple is new to Delhi. The old villages in and around Badarpur, Tajpur, Madanpur Khadar and Tughlakabad have families going back generations, with strong community ties. For them, the questions are more like those in Delhi's rural belt: bills in a grandparent's name, community expectations about caste and gotra, and older village weddings that were never registered. The same solutions apply: an affidavit linking the address, confidence that caste and gotra are not legal bars, and registration of old marriages with evidence of the ceremony. See our Alipur guide for more on village-belt address issues.
Timing Around Festivals and Peak Wedding Dates
Arya Samaj ceremonies do not depend on muhurat, but mandirs are busier on popular wedding dates and around festivals, and government offices close on gazetted holidays. If you have a fixed day off, book early. If your home family wants to celebrate on an auspicious date later, you can hold a family ceremony then; the legal marriage and registration can be done earlier in Delhi.
If You Need Police Protection
A short written request is enough. Include your names, ages with copies of age proof, your Badarpur address, a statement that you are adults who have married or intend to marry by choice, the names of the people you fear and what they have done or said, and any evidence such as messages or call recordings. Submit it at the local police station, send a copy to the DCP of the South East police district, and keep the received copy or diary number. If the threat comes from family in another state, a High Court protection petition through a lawyer can direct police there as well. Dial 112 in any emergency.
Documents by Type of Badarpur Couple
| Couple | Extra documents beyond the basic set |
|---|---|
| Both tenants from other states | Rent agreement and landlord's bill, or updated Aadhaar, for at least one partner |
| One partner in Faridabad | That partner's Haryana address proof; decision on registering state |
| Living together with a child | Nothing extra for the marriage; child's records may need updating afterwards |
| Married in home village, never registered | Photos, invitation card, affidavits, witnesses who attended |
| Previously married | Final divorce decree or death certificate |
| SC and non-SC couple planning an incentive | Both caste certificates, names matching marriage documents |
What We Ask on the First Call
- Your ages and what document proves them
- Your religions
- Whether either of you was married before
- Where each of you lives, and what your Aadhaar address shows
- Your home states, and whether a partner lives in Faridabad or Noida
- Whether families know, and whether there is any risk
- Your working days and weekly off
- Who your witnesses will be
With these answers we can tell you which route, which office, what to fix and the total cost, usually within a few minutes.
Why Registration Matters for Working Couples
Couples living away from their home communities have fewer people around who can vouch for their marriage if it is ever questioned. A government certificate is proof that does not depend on anyone else. It protects a wife's right to maintenance and residence, the children's rights, and access to benefits at work. It is also the only document that can be apostilled if either of you later moves abroad for work. For most couples it takes one appointment.
Older Records and Certified Copies
Couples who registered their marriage before 2026 sometimes ask where to get a certified copy now that offices have changed. Certificates issued before 1 January 2026 remain valid, and records moved with the reorganisation. Registered Delhi certificates can often be downloaded again through the e-District portal using the application details. If you need a certified copy, a correction, or verification for an apostille, ask which office now holds the records for your locality. Our duplicate certificate service costs ₹2,500 if you would like us to handle it.
After Registration: A Short Plan
- Same day: check the certificate and save scans on both phones.
- Within a week: give HR a copy for PF, ESIC and health insurance; update bank nominations.
- Within a month: update Aadhaar address or surname if needed, and the ration card if you use one.
- If moving abroad: start the apostille or embassy attestation early.
- If you had a child before marrying: ask the birth registration authority how to update the child's records with the parents' details.
Couples often put these steps off, then need the certificate urgently for a hospital admission, an insurance claim or a new job. A small amount of paperwork in the first month saves a lot of stress later.

Getting to the Office
- The Violet Line serves Badarpur Border, Tughlakabad and Sarai, and runs north towards central Delhi and south into Faridabad.
- Mathura Road is heavily congested at peak hours, especially near the border and Sarita Vihar; leave early for fixed appointments.
- Arrive with both witnesses; if they come from Faridabad or Noida, agree a meeting point near a metro station.
- Carry originals, two sets of copies and photographs, and check the office address on your slip.
Common Mistakes
- Relying on old pages that say "SDM Sarita Vihar" instead of checking the new allocation.
- Applying with an Aadhaar that shows a home-state address and no Delhi proof.
- Filing Special Marriage Act notice without real 30-day residence.
- Booking the appointment on a day the witnesses cannot leave work.
- Age proof left in the home state, discovered missing on the wedding day.
- Marrying in Faridabad and then trying to register in Delhi without checking jurisdiction.
- Relying on the mandir certificate alone.
Four Badarpur Situations
Warehouse colleagues from Bihar and UP
They rented separate rooms in Molarbund with no agreements. The groom updated his Aadhaar to his Delhi address, which took about ten days. They married by Arya Samaj rites on a Sunday and registered the following week with two colleagues as witnesses.
Faridabad bride, Badarpur groom
They married at a Delhi mandir and registered in Delhi on the basis of the groom's Badarpur address. Her Faridabad address proof was accepted as her own identity and address document.
Living together for three years
A couple had lived together in Jaitpur and had a child. They married by Arya Samaj rites and registered, which let them add each other to their employers' medical cover and correct the child's records.
Inter-religion couple with families in UP
Her family wanted him to convert. He did not wish to. They married under the Special Marriage Act in Delhi, where she had lived for over a year, after sending a protection request to the police.
