Quick answer: Couples from Alipur (pincode 110036, on NH-44 near the Singhu border) can marry legally in two main ways. If both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist, they can have an Arya Samaj Vedic wedding on the day they choose and then register it under the Hindu Marriage Act on the Delhi e-District portal. That costs ₹100 in government fees and usually takes one to two weeks, or one to two working days with the ₹10,000 Tatkal option. Couples of different religions marry under the Special Marriage Act, which needs a 30-day notice and takes about 35 to 60 days. Important for 2026: from 1 January 2026, Delhi's revenue map was reorganised into 13 districts and 39 sub-divisions aligned with MCD zones. Alipur now falls in the new Outer North district, and the old "SDM Alipur" references on older websites are out of date. The e-District portal allocates your office by address, so check before you book.
Key takeaways
- From 1 January 2026, Delhi has 13 revenue districts and 39 sub-divisions; Alipur is now in the Outer North district.
- Old "SDM Alipur" references are outdated; the e-District portal allocates your office by address.
- Two Hindus: Arya Samaj wedding + Hindu Marriage Act registration (₹100; Tatkal ₹10,000). Different religions: Special Marriage Act (30-day notice).
- Village (lal dora) address proofs and missing birth certificates are the usual obstacles; fix them before booking.
- Partner in Haryana? Confirm whether the marriage will be registered in Delhi or under Haryana's 2008 Act.

Alipur is not like central Delhi. Many of the couples who call us from here come from families that have farmed the land around Alipur, Bakhtawarpur, Khera Khurd, Budhpur and Singhu for generations. Others are newer residents: people who rent rooms near the industrial belts of Narela and Bawana, drivers and transporters working along NH-44, or families who moved here from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Their marriages raise the same legal questions as anyone else's, but the practical problems are different. Village addresses without neat utility bills, missing birth certificates, partners who live across the border in Sonipat, and strong family and community expectations all come up.
This guide is written for those situations. It explains the law, but it spends most of its time on what actually trips up Alipur couples and how to avoid it. For the general Delhi process, see court marriage in Delhi. For nearby areas, see our guides for Narela and Kanjhawala.

What Changed on 1 January 2026
Until the end of 2025, Delhi's revenue administration had 11 districts and 33 sub-divisions, and Alipur was one of the sub-divisions. Many websites, including an older version of this page, still refer to "SDM Alipur, North Delhi". That is now out of date.
By a notification of the Revenue Department dated 25 December 2025, effective 1 January 2026, Delhi was reorganised into 13 revenue districts and 39 sub-divisions. The boundaries were aligned with the zones of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and three new districts were created: Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North. The Shahdara district was dissolved and its areas redistributed. The number of sub-registrar offices was also increased.
| Before 2026 | From 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|
| 11 revenue districts | 13 revenue districts |
| 33 sub-divisions | 39 sub-divisions |
| Alipur a sub-division of North district | Alipur area within the new Outer North district |
| Revenue and MCD boundaries often mismatched | Revenue districts aligned with MCD zones |
For couples, the practical effect is simple: the office that registers your marriage is decided by the new map. Applications made to an office that no longer has jurisdiction over your address will be returned.
Which Office Handles Alipur Marriages Now
The new Outer North district has three sub-divisions: Narela, Bawana and Mundka. For most Alipur and nearby village addresses, the relevant sub-division is expected to be Narela, but the exact allocation depends on your locality and the new sub-division boundaries, and pockets near Burari and Samaypur may fall under North district instead. Do not rely on any website, including this one, for the final answer. Check it the reliable way:
- Log in to the Delhi e-District portal and start the marriage registration application.
- Enter the address exactly as it appears on your address proof.
- See which district and sub-division the portal shows for that address.
- If the portal's allocation looks wrong, stop and check before paying; a wrong address entry is the usual cause.
We check this for every Alipur couple before booking, because the reorganisation is recent and offices are still settling in. District-level mini secretariats are also being developed under the reorganisation, so the physical location of an office may change over time. Always check the address on your appointment slip.
Which address decides the office?
- Hindu Marriage Act registration: generally the office for the place where the marriage was performed or where either partner lives in Delhi, as the portal allows.
- Special Marriage Act: the Marriage Officer of the district where at least one partner has lived for 30 days before notice.
So an Alipur couple who marry at a mandir in central Delhi may be able to register at the office for the place of marriage or for their Alipur address. We advise on which is quicker at the time you apply.
Legal Routes for Alipur Couples
| Your situation | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Both Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist; not yet married | Arya Samaj wedding + Hindu Marriage Act registration | Wedding on the chosen day; certificate in about 1–2 weeks (Tatkal: 1–2 working days) |
| Already married by Hindu rites (village or temple wedding), never registered | Hindu Marriage Act registration of the existing marriage | About 1–2 weeks |
| Different religions, no conversion | Special Marriage Act | About 35–60 days |
| One partner abroad | Depends on religions; see NRI section | Plan the trip around the route |
A detailed comparison is in Arya Samaj marriage vs court marriage.
Arya Samaj Wedding + Registration From Alipur, Step by Step
- First call or WhatsApp: tell us both partners' ages, religions, addresses (village and pincode) and whether either has been married before.
- Document scans: send photos of age, identity and address proofs for both, and the witnesses' IDs. For village addresses, we check early whether the address proof will be accepted (see the address section).
- Choose the date: any day; many Alipur couples prefer weekdays to avoid weekend traffic on NH-44.
- Wedding day: originals checked, affidavits signed, the Vedic ceremony with saptapadi (about one to one and a half hours), and the mandir certificate issued.
- e-District application: under the Hindu Marriage Act, with the correct post-2026 office.
- Appointment: both partners and two witnesses attend with originals; ₹100 normal or ₹10,000 Tatkal.
- Certificate: check every spelling and date before leaving.
For what happens during the ceremony, see our Arya Samaj marriage guide. For the online application, see registration online in Delhi.
Special Marriage Act From Alipur
Couples of different religions who want to keep their faiths marry under the Special Marriage Act. From Alipur:
- One partner must have lived in the district for at least 30 days before notice, with address proof.
- Notice is filed online and verified at the office; it is then displayed for 30 days and may be sent to the other partner's home district.
- Objections are allowed only on legal grounds (age, existing spouse, capacity, prohibited relationship).
- After 30 days and within three months, the marriage is solemnised with three witnesses.
In a close-knit village area, the public notice is the main practical concern. Plan where you will stay during the 30 days and whether to request police protection. See inter-religion marriage and process step by step.
Address Proof in Alipur's Villages
Address proof is the most common problem we see from the Alipur belt. Many families live in ancestral houses inside the village abadi (lal dora) area, where property records are informal, bills may be in a grandfather's name, and there is no rent agreement because the family owns the house. Newer residents often rent rooms without formal agreements.
| Situation | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar already shows the current Alipur address | Aadhaar is usually enough as address proof |
| Family house in the village; bills in a parent's or grandparent's name | Your Aadhaar or voter ID at that address; or the bill plus proof of relationship and an affidavit |
| Voter ID at the village address | Generally accepted |
| Passport with the current address | Accepted |
| Renting a room without a written agreement | Get a registered or notarised rent agreement and a utility bill of the landlord, or update Aadhaar first |
| Recently moved from another state; Aadhaar shows old address | Update Aadhaar before applying, or use the partner whose Delhi address is documented |
Updating Aadhaar online usually takes some days, so start early. For the Special Marriage Act, the 30-day residence must be real and supported by proof, so a quick paper change just before filing is not advisable. Full alternatives are listed in documents required.
Age Proof for Village Families
Age proof matters more than anything else, and village families are more likely to have gaps: births not registered at the time, school records with estimated dates, or Aadhaar showing only a year of birth.
- Best proofs: Class 10 certificate or marksheet, municipal birth certificate, or passport.
- If the birth was never registered: apply for delayed registration of birth through the Delhi birth and death registration system (MCD), which requires supporting evidence and an order for late registration. This takes time, so start weeks ahead.
- If you left school early: the school leaving or transfer certificate from the last school attended is often accepted.
- If dates differ across documents: use the Class 10 certificate or birth certificate as primary proof and explain small differences by affidavit.
- Aadhaar: useful for identity and address, but weak as proof of date of birth.
The groom must be at least 21 and the bride at least 18 on the wedding date. If either is just below the age, wait and book for the birthday. See legal marriage age.
Couples Across the Haryana Border
Alipur sits next to the Singhu border, and many marriages involve one partner from Kundli, Sonipat or another part of Haryana. The law is the same on both sides, but registration offices are not.
| Situation | Where to register |
|---|---|
| Wedding performed in Delhi, one partner lives in Alipur | Delhi, through e-District, at the office allocated for the Alipur address or place of marriage |
| Wedding performed in Delhi, both partners live in Haryana | Delhi may be possible if jurisdiction allows on the basis of place of marriage; otherwise Haryana |
| Wedding performed in Haryana | Haryana, under the Haryana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008, through Haryana's online system |
| Different religions | Special Marriage Act in the district where one partner has lived 30 days before notice |
We check jurisdiction before the wedding, so that the couple knows where the certificate will be issued and does not travel for nothing.
Family Opposition and Community Pressure
Families in the Alipur belt, as in many parts of rural Delhi and Haryana, can have strong views about caste, gotra and whom their children marry. Some couples come to us with full family support; others come because their families have refused. The legal position is clear:
- Adults (21 and 18) may marry without parents' or community permission.
- Caste and gotra are not legal bars; the Hindu Marriage Act does not prohibit same-gotra marriage.
- Community councils or panchayats have no legal power over marriages. The Supreme Court in Shakti Vahini v. Union of India (2018) held that interference with consenting adults' marriages is unlawful and directed police to protect couples.
- If you fear harm, submit a written protection request to the local police station and the DCP of the Outer North police district, keep the received copy, and consider a High Court protection petition.
- In an emergency, dial 112.
Practical advice from our experience: secure your documents before telling family, choose witnesses who will support you, marry and register promptly, and keep copies with a trusted friend. Details are in love marriage legal rights.
Inter-Caste Couples From Alipur
Inter-caste marriage is fully legal, and the Arya Samaj ceremony does not ask about caste. Where one partner belongs to a Scheduled Caste and the other does not, the couple may be eligible for the central Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages (₹2.5 lakh, first marriage, registered, applied for within one year) and a Delhi government incentive. Registration of the marriage is essential for both. See inter-caste marriage in Delhi.
Inter-Religion Couples
Couples of different religions should use the Special Marriage Act, which lets both keep their faiths. Conversion only to marry is legally risky, and Haryana, where many partners from this belt come from, has its own law regulating religious conversion. If a partner genuinely wishes to adopt the Hindu faith, take advice first. See Shuddhi and marriage.
NRI Families From the Alipur Belt
Many families from outer North Delhi and neighbouring Haryana have relatives in Canada, Australia, the UK and the Gulf, and some marriages involve a partner living abroad. The key points:
- Both partners must be present in India for the wedding and registration.
- Two Hindus can marry by Arya Samaj rites and register with Tatkal on a short trip; there is no 30-day residence rule on this route.
- The government certificate usually needs an apostille for a spouse visa.
- Families should verify the NRI partner's visa, marital status and employment before the wedding.
See the NRI marriage guide and apostille for visa.
Witnesses in a Village Setting
Two adult witnesses who know you are needed for Hindu Marriage Act registration, and three for the Special Marriage Act. In villages, couples sometimes hesitate to ask anyone for fear that word will spread. Friends from college or work, a supportive cousin, or a trusted neighbour are all fine. Witnesses can live anywhere and need only valid ID and address proof. We do not provide witnesses, because the law expects witnesses to know you. See witness rules.
Registering a Village Wedding That Already Happened
A large share of our Alipur enquiries are not about getting married at all. They are about registering a marriage that took place years ago by traditional rites in the village, at a local temple or at home, and was never registered. The need usually surfaces suddenly: a passport application, a job abroad, a bank or insurance claim, a child's admission, or a family property matter.
The good news is that a valid Hindu marriage can be registered long after the ceremony. What the office needs is evidence that the marriage actually took place by customary rites:
| Evidence | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Photographs of the ceremony, especially the pheras | Shows the essential rites were performed |
| Wedding invitation card | Shows the date and place and that families were involved |
| Temple or priest's certificate, if any | Supporting record of the ceremony |
| Affidavits from both spouses | Date, place, rites and marital status at the time |
| Witnesses who attended the wedding | They confirm the marriage at the appointment |
| Children's birth certificates naming both parents | Supports the relationship for older marriages |
Both spouses must appear with two witnesses. The office may ask why registration was delayed; a simple, honest explanation in the affidavit is best. Do not stage a new ceremony to create a fresh date. The certificate should record the real marriage date, which matters for visas and for any later legal question. Our registration service for an existing marriage costs ₹6,000; see also marriage registration.
The Couples We See From Alipur
Over the years, the Alipur enquiries we receive have fallen into a few broad groups, each with its own typical questions:
- Village families with full family support who want a simple, dignified Vedic wedding without a large expense, and a government certificate. For them the combined Arya Samaj and registration package is usually the right fit.
- Couples whose families are opposed, often because of caste or gotra. Their priorities are confidentiality, speed and safety.
- Newer residents renting near the industrial areas, often with a partner from their home state. Address proof and jurisdiction are their main issues.
- Couples with a partner across the border in Haryana, who need clarity on which state registers the marriage.
- Families with a member abroad, who need a certificate quickly and apostilled for a spouse visa.
- Long-married couples who never registered and now need the certificate for official purposes.
Whatever the group, the first conversation is the same: ages, religions, marital history, addresses and deadline. Those five facts decide the route.
After the Marriage: Records Worth Updating
- Ration card and family records: add the spouse where the household uses one.
- Voter ID: a bride moving into her husband's family home can shift her voter registration to the new address.
- Aadhaar: update the address, and the surname if she chooses to change it.
- Bank, insurance and provident fund: add the spouse as nominee.
- Land and family property: for families with agricultural land, keep the marriage certificate safely, as it may be needed in future succession or mutation matters.
- Passport: the government certificate supports adding a spouse's name.

Documents by Type of Alipur Couple
| Couple | Extra documents beyond the basic set |
|---|---|
| Both from Alipur village families | Affidavit linking address if bills are in a relative's name; school leaving certificate if no Class 10 |
| One partner renting near Narela or Bawana industrial areas | Rent agreement and landlord's utility bill, or updated Aadhaar |
| One partner from Haryana | That partner's Haryana address proof; decision on which state registers |
| One partner previously married | Final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate |
| One partner abroad | Passport; marital status document from abroad if required |
| Registering an old village wedding | Photographs, invitation card, affidavits, witnesses who attended |
| SC and non-SC couple planning an incentive | Both caste certificates with names matching marriage documents |
What Happens at the Registration Appointment
Couples from Alipur often worry about the appointment itself, especially if they have not dealt with government offices before. It is usually short and straightforward when documents are in order:
- Arrival and token: arrive early with both partners and both witnesses; queues form at many offices.
- Document check: staff compare originals with the uploaded copies.
- Before the officer: the officer confirms your identities, ages and the marriage, and may ask the witnesses how they know you.
- Signatures: both partners and the witnesses sign the register.
- Certificate: issued on the day or shortly afterwards, and downloadable from the portal.
Dress simply and bring every original. If a question is asked about your marriage, answer honestly and briefly. If there is a problem with a document, the officer will usually tell you what is missing; do not argue, fix it and return.
If You Need Protection: What to Write
If you fear that families or others may harm you, a short written request to the police helps. It does not need legal language. Include:
- Your names, ages (with copies of age proof) and addresses.
- That you are adults who have married, or intend to marry, of your own free will.
- The names and relationship of the people you fear, and what they have said or done.
- Any evidence: messages, call records, voice notes.
- A request for protection of your life and liberty.
Submit it at the local police station and send a copy to the DCP of the Outer North police district. Keep the received copy or diary number. If the threat is serious, a High Court protection petition through a lawyer is the next step. In an emergency, dial 112.
Questions We Ask Alipur Couples on the First Call
- How old are you both, and what document proves your age?
- What are your religions?
- Has either of you been married before?
- Where does each of you live, and what does your address proof show?
- Is either of you from Haryana or living abroad?
- Do your families know, and is there any risk of harm?
- Do you have a deadline, such as a visa or job date?
- Who will be your witnesses?
With these answers, we can tell you within minutes which route fits, which office will handle your registration under the new district map, what documents are missing, and what the whole process will cost.
Why Registration Matters So Much Here
In village communities, a marriage is often considered complete once the family and community have witnessed the ceremony, and registration can seem like a formality. The law sees it differently. Delhi requires marriages performed in Delhi to be registered, and in practice the government certificate is what protects the wife and children: for maintenance and residence rights, for inheritance of family land, for passports and visas, and for proving the marriage if it is ever disputed. We have seen too many cases where a woman married for years could not prove her marriage quickly when she needed to. Registering takes a single appointment.

Travel Planning From Alipur
- By metro: Samaypur Badli is the nearest Yellow Line station; Jahangirpuri is the next. Allow time for the road journey from Alipur to the station.
- By road: NH-44 can be slow at peak hours, especially near the border and at interchanges. Leave early for fixed-time appointments.
- With witnesses: travel together, or agree a meeting point near the office, so no one is late.
- Carry: all originals, two sets of copies, photographs, and a charged phone with document scans.
- Office address: check the address on your appointment slip; offices may move as the new district set-up settles.
Mistakes Alipur Couples Make
- Applying to the old "SDM Alipur" based on outdated information, instead of the office the portal allocates after the 2026 reorganisation.
- Address proof in someone else's name without an affidavit or relationship proof.
- No reliable age proof, discovered only on the wedding day.
- Registering in the wrong state when one partner is from Haryana.
- Witnesses who back out because of family pressure; choose people who genuinely support you.
- Relying on a village temple certificate alone; register with the government.
- Telling family before securing documents, when there is a risk of opposition.
Four Alipur Situations
Typical cases, with details changed for privacy.
The lal dora address
A groom from a village near Alipur had bills only in his grandfather's name. His voter ID showed the village address, which was accepted, supported by an affidavit. The couple married by Arya Samaj rites and registered within two weeks.
The Kundli bride
The bride lived across the border in Kundli, Haryana; the groom in Alipur. They married at a Delhi mandir and registered in Delhi on the basis of the groom's Alipur address and the place of marriage.
The missing birth certificate
A bride's birth had never been registered and she had left school in Class 8. She obtained a school leaving certificate and applied for delayed birth registration. The wedding was booked only once her age proof was settled, about two months later.
The older village wedding
A couple married by traditional rites in their village five years earlier had never registered. When the husband needed the certificate for a job abroad, they registered the existing marriage with photographs and affidavits from relatives who attended, using Tatkal.

How We Help Alipur Couples
We have helped couples from Alipur and the villages around it since 1998. We check address and age proofs before booking, confirm which office handles your address under the new 2026 structure, advise couples with a partner in Haryana on jurisdiction, conduct the Arya Samaj ceremony, and handle e-District registration so you leave with a government certificate. We keep every enquiry confidential. We do not provide witnesses.
Families from Alipur and the villages around it often call us first on WhatsApp in the evening, after the day's work in the fields or at the shop. That is fine. Send clear photos of the documents you have, tell us where each of you lives and whether a wedding has already taken place, and we will reply with a plain list of what is missing and the next step.
